More than a week ago two typhoons hit the Philippines again and only a few days was in between them. First it wat Pedring followed by Quiel. The names are the Filipino names given to typhoons entering the Philippine Area of Responsability. Pedring’s international name is Nesat and hit september 27 2011, exactly 2 years and 1 day after Ondoy left a big part of the Philippines flooded and killed many. Pedring also killed several people and brought so much rain that a big part of the Philippines, the provinces Bulacan and Pampanga a little north from the Manila Area, are flooded and many people had to seek for shelter in evacuation places. Schools and other large buildings are used to temporarily give those people a roof and a place to sleep safely. Quiel, with international name Nalgae hit the Philippines september 30 and October 1. This time the typhoon passed a little more north but left a lot of rain in the same area. Even in Manila it was raining that much that several streets and areas were flooded as well. So far around 90 people were killed during these two typhoons and still around 25 are missing, but [...]

Related posts:

medical insurance is a must
When someone moves to the Philippines, or to other 3rd world countries, it is almost an obligation to have a good health insurance plan.
Today, and also yesterday, a tropical depression is passing the Philippines, dropping lots of rain which are causing floods, unreachable areas and several casualties. The name of this storm is: “Juaning” (international codename Nock-Ten). It is the tenth ‘typhoon’ in the Philippine area of responsability of this year and it has a diameter of 500 km which covers a large part of the Philippines, especialy the island of Luzon and a large part of the Visayas. Big parts of the Bicol region are flooded and more than 20 people have been killed or missing so far. It is expected that this number will rise as the typhoon will cross the mainland travelling from south east to north west. In the affected areas all schools were suspended because of the expected storm and heavy rains. Many people have been stranded in different places while travelling. They are not able to continue and have to wait where they are until the weather will be better. In a country that counts over 7000 islands, many people travel by boat, and most boats are not sailing because of the storm. An other problem in the Bicol region now is the fact that there is [...]

Related posts:

more tagalog lessons 1
One of the stars of ABS-CBN tv is the weather man Kuya Kim (Kim Atienza).
This time of the year is rainy season in the Philippines. many low pressure systems are passing the country and some are even developing into Typhoons. When (sometimes heavy) rains start hitting the country in May and June everybody is bringing an umbrella to be protected for the rain. Stores are making good business in selling these umbrellas. Prices are not realy high (starting at 50 pesos), but the quality is also not to good. And when you see people in the streets when it rains they protect themselves for getting wet on different ways. I took a few pictures and here is a small selection of them. A few days ago Flor and I went to a shopping center and while we were there, suddenly we heard strong rains on top of the roof of the building, so we decided to go home immediately. But we were too late already to make it without stranding in flush floods. On our way home we have passed already two places where water was about one foot high in the street and when we entered our subdivision again we had to pass lots of water. Next to the entrance gate sits a [...]

Comments

July 3, 2011, filmguy writes: I have been in and out of the Philippines since 1979 and it still amazes me the with over 7000 islands they have not figured a drainage system to get all that water to the ocean but then I am still surprised at how many filipinos don't know how to swim (like my wife)

July 3, 2011, Jan writes: Hi Filmguy,
That many Filipinos do not know how to swim is true, it amazes me as well.
But they need to learn first not to throw all their garbage in the streets, canals and creeks. Those waterways will not be clogged, and no waterhyacints will grow to form an obstruction for the water to flow to the large rivers and the see.
Garbage is the number 1 reason for flooding areas.

Related posts:

newsletter Expat in the Philippines
Dear [USER-NAME],

The one passing last few days was called Domeng. Until today we had 4 already, not bringing much damage but just lots of rain and some flooding on lots of places. Number 5 is approaching and will arrive coming weekend or short after the weekend. At the moment it is still a tropical depression some 900 kms south east of the Philippines, but it might develop into a tropical cyclone. When it does the name will be Ester. Heavy rain was falling yesterday, as usual in the afternoon. In the morning it is mostly dry and no sign of rain clouds. A perfect time to do shopping or to go somewhere. The afternoons are unpredictable. If the sky gets darker, better go home and stay there. Early afternoon yesterday we went to Marikina, to the Riverbanks mall. Normally a ride of 10 minutes going there and 10 back. It is only 5 or so kms. Around 4 PM is was starting to rain a little so we decided to prepare to go home and around 5 [...]

Comments

August 5, 2010, Dave DeWall writes: Good advice, Jan.
