I know you won't like the answer but here it is. buy a lot and build it yourself or almost. I am bringing my relatives from a different province and they will build a shack to live in while they build my house. I will be there everyday and so will my asawa who is relentless with her family. I am going to build a 3000 square foot house brick and steel for less than 50 thousand usd. I have checked and rechecked all the figures. the lot is paid for so thats my plan. Bigger pain in the ass but in the end you get what you want. I let my filippino relatives deal with the permits which are not a big deal in Baguio.Also I am selling a 2500 sq m lot in baguio and when that sells I will begin the build.I am sure you know if you get out of the Manila area it's cheaper. Also Angeles city seems to be the most corrupt from what I know. good luck my friend.

Problem is that you have to be at the site every day. For us that's a little bit a problem because of the distance (with traffic 2 or more hours, one way). Going into a hotel for this time is no option. That's the reason we try to find a house which suits us and we can make changes later if necessary. Thanks for your vision......

Trying to learn the ways of a new place is never an easy task, thankfully we amateurs have guys like you to learn from. Although I am not currently married or have a filipina gf, I do enjoy Asian cultures so much. Although I have traveled to the other big 3, Korea, China, and Thailand, I will be making my first landing in the Philippines this Dec. I'll be spending about 40 or so days guaging if its a country I might like to retire to. I'm about 6 years from retirement, and will be aged 47 at that time. I have already started gathering and storing things that I know I will need there or quite possibly in Thailand. I currently work abroad already and have absolutely no desire to live again in the States, many, many things that I thought were important while living there, are simply not anymore. Anyways, keep up the great work on your site here. I think its only going to get better and better. Oh! and good luck with you property search. Hope you find something you and your wife really like.

• October 27, 2009, Jan writes: David, Tagaytay is a little more expensive, especially if one chooses the subdivisions with lake view. Most of the subdivisions on the other side of the street on the rim are much cheaper. One can buy a nice lot already for about 5500 per square meter.
• November 2, 2009, Dave DeWall writes: Hi Jan, good luck in finding a new place, we are fortunate in Guimaras not to have a flooding problem, but when we take the pontoon boat to nearby Iloilo City to shop, they have a massive flooding problem there. One thing I am sure you have found out that those places you see on the Internet are sure a lot different then when you see them in person. My sister-in-law in Metro Manila told us about a subdivision that was near her that was really great, we looked at on the Web before we got to Guimaras. Seemed like a nice place. Checked out it when we visited my sister-in-law, the place was a dump! I'm sure you will find something suitable.

Sometimes you can only reach those places by going through a long road with slumb areas on both sides. That's the reason we are visiting a lot of places first before contacting the seller. We have to like the surrounding area first. I am sure that we will find something in the near future. I'll keep my readers posted about it.

I met aguy a couple years ago that said he rented a small house on the beach in La Union that cost him about $120.oo, and his electric bill was about $80.00 while running the aircon 24/7. Especially when you go a little into the towns around Tagaytay like Mendez, Alfonso or Amadeo. It all depends on the type of house and the quality of it, and the location. The best would be to just drive around and look for signs along the street.

There are several websites wher you can find more info and prices about real estate for sale and for rent. Check Ayos Dito. Cebu is in region VII. But there are many more. It depends on the search terms you use. Internet is no problem. There are several providers to choose from. Prices vary and are depending on bandwith.

Lots of people who are looking for rentals also buy newspapers. Newspapers and special add-periodicals are used more for houses for rent. If you are able to get such papers, you will find something suitable. House rentals in the greater Manila area are higher than in the rest of the country. This is normal and you will see this all over the world. Larger cities are always more expensive. But it is still possible to rent a townhouse or bungalow in the metro area for 10000 to 15000 pesos a month. Only NOT in the expensive areas like Makati and others.
• October 11, 2010, David writes: The Pinoy Karoake, alcoholism, kids walking half naked, toddlers roaming in the streets late at night, underage minors doing illegal stuff and beggards. It is chaotic and unpleasant sometimes to witness all this mess, but it is a reality in my opinion of decaying society in despair. Yet, there is decent people, others are quiet, others just got a blind eye about it, because it is not their responsability. In other words it is a divided community. Between the rich and the poor. I opt to move the hell out of town, away from that dragging madness, into a more private area. My wife and I bought 214 sqm lot, and know we are almost completed with our house project. The good thing about it, I will put some serious miles between my in-laws and that barrio life style. We will be living near Tagatay, not so close to Taal but at a respectible distance from "El Barrio." It is a good feeling to be able to ride my mountain bike again, better oxygen, and healthy for my kid.
