Sometimes Filipinos are strange people. They are proud to be a Filipino, but like to live abroad. They do not like their country called a Third World Country, but keep on throwing garbage in the streets and pee everywhere. They love their country a lot, but hate products manufactured in the Philippines. If they own a car they like the car to have a foreign look, as if they bought it abroad, as if it was imported! For that reason some clever business people have imported used European License plates, most of them temporary plates, to sell them to Filipino car owners for high prices. Those plates are placed behind the Filipino license plate so only a small part is visible. When you are on the road you must have noticed these double plates on cars. In two earlier posts I wrote already about it and showed you the pictures of those plates which are available in stores and markets. See: my first post about license plates and the follow-up post. Just a few days ago I was in a hardware store, Handyman this time, and suddenly I saw these brand new fake license plates probably produced in the Philippines [...]

Related posts:

license plates in the Philippines

The use of abbreviations in the Philippines is very common. They are used for practicaly everything with a little longer name or sentence, just like everywhere in the world. I have the impression that Filipinos are using abbreviations more than elsewhere in the world, but that’s just my opinion. Official offices have such abbreviations where non-English foreigners like this Expat in the Philippines (yours truly) sometimes are puzzled what the meaning is. They are even used on TV and in newspapers without further explanation. A few examples: DOJ Department of Justice DepEd Department of Education MOA Mall of Asia (one of the the largest malls in the world, located in Pasay, and has 780 shops + 300 dining establishments, several cinemas, bowling lanes, amusement centers, department store, super-supermarket and more) GMA Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (the former president), but GMA is also a TV network GenSan General Santos City NCR National Capital Region (the former Metro Manila) and a very nice one: Luzviminda. This Abbreviation is used to name the three largest regions in the Philippines: LUzon VIsayas MINDAnao, but I know that many women in the Philippines also carry the same name If you have abbreviations [...]

Related posts:

How Filipinos are (my point of view) part 3
In my first post about this subject I told you already about several things, typical Filipino.
Recently I was visiting a subdivision to see if there was a nice house to buy when I spotted a remarkable fence around an open lot. The metal structure on top of the wall was formed in musical script with many notes and musical symbols. The owner of the lot must love music a lot or be a musician I suppose. No house was build yet, just the fencing was made so far and already a few years old seen the state it was in. If the music can be played I do not know, maybe someone from my readers can try and tell us. But I think it’s all just fantasy notes.
January 23, 2012 is Chinese New Year. Many countries with Chinese communities celebrate this festivity. One of the TV channels is broadcasting a live event from Querino Grandstand and takes whole evening with a countdown to midnight. The Philippines has a large Chinese Community, and several large stores and chains are owned by Chinese. Those stores are lavishly decorated with red lanterns and golden accents. They sell lots of smaller and larger decoration items. One of the many examples is SM, owned by a Chinese descendant Henry Sy. All SM malls and stores are decorated for this yearly event, or should I say happening because it really is a happening when you see dragon and lion dance groups enter these premises. With lots of drums (noise) they dance through the stores and malls trying to get all the red envelopes put there by the owners. In those envelopes there’s money. Donating money to the Lions and Dragons brings luck and good business for the stores. Today January 22 and the coming days you will see these groups all over the country visiting malls and shops to enforce luck for the stores they are going to. KUNG HEI FAT CHOI !!
Did you read my post More fun in the Philippines ? This story is not part of that, but in a way it has to do with it. The following story I found on the Internet. By Patrick Camara Ropeta, ABS-CBN Europe News Bureau, Posted at 02/26/2011 Toughest Place to be a… Bus Driver?, this part of a BBC series exploring difficult working conditions around the world, has chosen Manila as the toughest place for drivers due to appalling road conditions in the city. The documentary followed the experience of John West, a British bus driver from London who spent a week in Manila to try his luck as a jeepney driver. “I know about Imelda Marcos and the shoes, but not much beyond that” he said. “It wasn’t what I was expecting at all.” The filmmakers revealed dangerous driving conditions in Manila, exposing lack of discipline by local drivers, lack of coherent traffic rules, lack of health and safety regulations, and chronic road congestion. The documentary is extraordinarily factual and we have high praises for the truths and realities presented,? enthused May Altarejos-Cueva from Project CARES, a Philippine initiative promoting road safety. ?We are happy that there is a [...]

Related posts:

taxi in the Philippines
Writing about taxi's in the Philippines is not an easy task.
When I first saw the name of this store in the Philippines I started to laugh at the ingenuity of Filipinos to find a name for their business. I wrote already a few times about this name giving thing in the Philippines. Remember Mang Donald for newly opened fast food restaurant? See the Mang Donald post, or the Brad Pitt name use, or Copyrights a farce?. But it is not always copying names. Filipinos also invent sometimes funny names for their businesses. Along Tuazon Ave in Cubao you can find this hardware store selling all kinds of screws, bolts and nuts. If they do other things than selling screws I do not know.
