Markets in the Philippines are very rich in colour. And many expats living in the Philippines like to go to the local markets to find their food. Some parts of the markets are called ‘wet section’. Those are the areas where fresh meat and fresh fish are sold. The products often are cooled with raw ice which is delivered by trucks in big blocks weighing 50 or more kilos (100 pounds). Shop owners cut those blocks in pieces and put them on the fish or meat. All this ice is melting in the hot temperature and the water is dripping on the ground making the alleys wet and sometimes slippery. For that reason it is called the ‘wet section’. At the same time some blood from the meat is also dripping. This gives the wet section a certain smell which can also be found in some supermarkets with a ‘wet section’. My wife and I have visited several markets in the last two years. Most of the time we are going to the market in the center of Marikina. But from time to time we also go to Farmers market in Cubao, or to other markets in surrounding areas. I've just recently started reading your articles and they are very informative and realistic. Lived in the Philippines for 4 years in the 80's with my wife and loved it. Well the kids are grown and I will be retiring in about three years and we will be heading home to the Philippines for good. So as of now we are getting the ball rolling and preparing for that day. Three years goes fast when you think about it.
Thats why I like finding sites that give me a real overview of Filipino life. Jan so far yours is pretty well on point. This market article with pictures made me a bit homesick brought up alot of memories. I like sites that are clean and give good quality reads not the one that always talk about girls, bars and sex. (I was in the Navy over there in the 80's so I'm not blind to those facts.) Thanks!! Keep the pictures coming!!
By the way found your site through David Starr's site he's a very intellegent guy.

November 20, 2010, Jan writes: Thanks Bruce for your nice words.
I like to keep my website 'clean' from posts about girls and sex. There are enough already.
I just like to write about what I find interesting and funny. And saying that with pictures is my way of showing about MY life in the Philippines as an Expat.
Thanks again.

November 20, 2010, Randall writes: I love the pictures. The pictures of the fish made me want to come back to the Philippines so bad. You can't get fish like that in the States.

I love the markets as well. The market in Iloilo is very interesting and a great way for a foreigner to kill an entire day! There is such a variety it will keep you entertained just looking around.

November 20, 2010, Jan writes: Randall,

Long time ago, when I was still living in Holland, I was passing a store selling ladies underwear and garments. In their display window the owner placed lots of bra’s and a sign next to it: do not leave them hanging for 2,95 guilders (the old currency). His advertizing could mean two things: a, Buy these bra’s for only 2,95 b, Do not leave your boobs just hanging: wear a bra for only 2,95. I did find it very funny and never forgot this, especially for the double meaning. When my wife and I went to the market in Marikina recently I spotted this little shop there. Immediately I was thinking of the advertisement I saw years ago. For that reason I took pictures and share this with you. I do not know the price of the bra’s, and I didn’t ask for it. The owner just smiled at me when I took the pictures.
