A few days ago we were in Marikina with a Brittish-Filipino couple. While going around we wanted to drink something and take a little rest. We went to Pan de Amerikana, a restaurant, bread shop and cafe in Marikina, barangay Conception Dos. The place is founded in 1950 as a bake shop where you can buy several kinds of fresh baked bread and pandesal. It has developed in a restaurant where one can have breakfast and lunch and even an early dinner. (closing time daily at 7 PM) They still sell the high quality pandesal and bread. Outside of the restaurant the decor is a windmill. Why a windmill ?? I do not know. The interior can best be described as very surprising. It is a kind of jungle garden with a pond containing several gold fish and koi. Many live plants and nice ornaments decorating the place. You have to see for your self. There are many tables tyo serve the customers, they even have a kind of easy chairs for just relaxing. One wall is made of glass with plants behind and in front of it.
Marikina City has recovered from the ONDOY flooding dissaster. I wrote about it in several posts earlier. It’s Christmas time now. Marikina City has made a nice display for this event by telling the story of Christmas. It is told by the mayor to a few children, not in live person but using moving and talking puppets in a beatifull display at the Marikina City Hall. I have been seeing the preparing of this display a few weeks ago and took some pictures. It was only yesterday that we were able to go there and see the show. The show is played between 6 PM and 11 PM every day and every 30 minutes. The whole show is about 15 minutes long and really worth being seen. For those who are living too far from Marikina, I brought my camera and make a few shots of it, showing now below. The display is also shown at YouTube: Marikina Xmas display Share and Enjoy

Comments

December 4, 2009, Dave DeWall writes: Nice to see the Christmas display, Jan.
Like so many countries, the Philippines also has a NON-SMOKING policy. In public places (restaurants, shopping malls etc.) it is not allowed to smoke. Large warnings on every pack of smokes, that you will get cancer, or it affects the fertility and so on, are to discourage people to smoke. On the other hand they allow children to smoke (maybe not officially, but still…) and to sell cigarettes in the streets. As you know my wife and I frequently visit the public market in Marikina City. It was there where I spotted a new sign against smoking. The sign was pasted against a post. Later I have seen several more of them on different spots in the market streets. After a few minutes looking around, as I usually do, I spotted a car coming. Immediately I took my camera and made a picture of it. Funny is that on the front there is an add from Marlboro but on the door a warning from the government written. When the car was gone in the usual cloud of smoke (it drove too fast to take one more shot) I had my own thoughts……about smoking and smoke in general. A pack of cigarettes costs about 30 or 40 pesos. A liter of local rum or gin costs about 85 pesos. A birth certificate for a child (without which s/he will _not_ be admitted to school) costs 600 pesos or more (could be a lot more if the family has to travel back to their ancestral province to get one from hospital ot church records).

I could be wrong here, but I think someone's priorities are a bit skewed.

November 22, 2009, Jan writes: Dave,
You're so right.

I am making a presentation about smoking in the Philippines. I would like to include some pictures. I wanted to know if I could use your photo of the two girls selling cigarettes. I am very conscious of copyright and permissions issues, so I would say that I would also need the permission of the girls in the photo to use their picture.

It would be great if you could contact me to let me know if this is OK or to discuss it.

Thank you!

September 16, 2010, Jan writes: Hi Diliana,
Thanks for visiting my website.
You are allowed to use any of my pictures as long as you mention the source. Please refer to my website in every picture you use.

It will be hard to find the two girls on the picture, so asking them for permission will be difficult. They have posed for my camera so I assume there's no problem.

Let me know when the article is available to read, and the address. I would like to read your story.

Related posts:

smoking ban in Manila
[caption id="" align="alignright" width="300" caption="smoking children in Manila, Philippines"] [/caption]Last year I published already a post about smoking in the Philippines and the possibilities to buy cigarettes everywhere, even in traffic jams and public places like markets, jeepney stops, bus

Noynoy, smoking or not
President-apparent Sen.
