Did you read my post More fun in the Philippines ? This story is not part of that, but in a way it has to do with it. The following story I found on the Internet. By Patrick Camara Ropeta, ABS-CBN Europe News Bureau, Posted at 02/26/2011 Toughest Place to be a… Bus Driver?, this part of a BBC series exploring difficult working conditions around the world, has chosen Manila as the toughest place for drivers due to appalling road conditions in the city. The documentary followed the experience of John West, a British bus driver from London who spent a week in Manila to try his luck as a jeepney driver. “I know about Imelda Marcos and the shoes, but not much beyond that” he said. “It wasn’t what I was expecting at all.” The filmmakers revealed dangerous driving conditions in Manila, exposing lack of discipline by local drivers, lack of coherent traffic rules, lack of health and safety regulations, and chronic road congestion. The documentary is extraordinarily factual and we have high praises for the truths and realities presented,? enthused May Altarejos-Cueva from Project CARES, a Philippine initiative promoting road safety. ?We are happy that there is a [...]

Related posts:

taxi in the Philippines
Writing about taxi's in the Philippines is not an easy task.
When I was walking in Eastwood Libis, a shopping and office area in Quezon City along the C5 road, I suddenly noticed a building in remarkable colours. The colors resembling a very expensive and famous painting of a Dutch painter artist who died in the USA in 1944. His name: Piet Mondriaan. In his paintings Mondriaan evolved a non-representational form which he termed Neo-Plasticism. This consisted of white ground, upon which was painted a grid of vertical and horizontal black lines and the three primary colors. One of his works of art is the one I found on the Internet, published here. The next picture is the one I took in Eastwood Libis. You can see the similarity. It is clear that the owner of the building wanted something special and maybe he is a ‘connaisseur’ of art. I am not sure if the wall is finished already, or that the copying painter doesn’t have enough paint to finish the wall ….
Fort Bonifacio in Taguig, Metro Manila supposed to be THE place to go for fine dining. Flor and I do not like to spend that much on dining, we usually look for other places with good food and for affordable prices. But that’s not the reason for this story. Last week we were walking in the Fort when I suddenly spotted this window of a Chinese restaurant. When I saw this window I immediately thought of some small local chinese restaurants in some back streets in Hong Kong when we visited that city some years ago. The smell in these streets was not the best and the windows were dirty and difficult to look inside the places. This window on the picture is not appealing to me, and to go inside and have a meal there? I do not know about you, my dear readers, but even if I was very hungry and this one was the only restaurant in the world, I wouldn’t like to go in there. The same goes for the restrooms of a restaurant. As a former waiter in expensive restaurants back in Europe I know that hygiene is one of the most important things in restaurants.
Several thousands liters of clean water were spilled in Quezon city when a defect occured in the Manila water system November 1 2010. The place: corner Araneta Avenue and E. Rodriguez Sr. Boulevard. A perfect opportunity for many children to play, and for women from the neighborhood to wash some clothes. Defects like this one are seen from time to time in the streets of Manila and surroundings. Last year I spotted one along Recto Avenue. For some reason it takes Manila Water many hours to stop the spilling of precious water.
One of the things a tourist in the Philippines must see is the Greenhills Shopping Centre in San Juan, Metro Manila. The shopping center is located along Ortigas Avenue. Every taxi driver knows how to go there. The area is very large and it is easy to get lost or loose your companion in the busy and sometimes narrow lanes. To see the whole area will cost you several hours or maybe more than a day. In the center of the area is a small park with large trees, an perfect place to meet eachother after shopping around. The shopping center further consists of several malls, of which one is a luxurious one: called “The Shops”, an other one has narrow alleys and has only fashion shops, a third one is a mixture of everything. A special Shoe arcade is also available. There is also a large supermarket next to the first mall with many imported food items. Many restaurants (from cheap to expensive, fast food and a-la-carte) can be found around the shopping center and inside the malls. Check the plan on the pictures at the start of this post. But the most attractive for tourists is the shopping arcade [...]

Related posts:

slanting tower in the Philippines
Do we have a slanting tower in the Philippines?

Every Saturday morning until 2 PM a market is held in Salcedo Village, Makati. The market is known among many foreigners, especially those living in the area. There are several stands where one can buy fresh vegetables, fruits and herbs, fresh fish and other items. Many sellers are offering freshly cooked food. European, American and of course Filipino foods are widely available. Almost all food can be consumed at the spot because in the center of the market -under the large trees- several tables are placed to sit and eat. Many of those stalls offer free tasting of their specialties. I have noticed that several stalls are owned by foreigner people who like to do something with their spare time and started growing ‘foreign’ vegetables or cooking foreign food. Some of them do this professionally. They offer their products in this market. The prices of the goods are above normal prices compared to most supermarkets and wet markets in the Philippines. On the other hand most of the products are sold by the owners themselves and are fresher than sold elsewhere in the city. If you never tasted roasted suckling pig Filipino style, this is the place to taste it. Thanks for visiting my website and leaving this comment.
A GPS might be a good idea, but are those maps updated regularely?
Streets are changing all the time, U-turns are closed and new ones are made almost daily. How can garmin fix this problem?

August 25, 2010, Mike Mc Carthy writes: Hi Jan,

great site and info. I am Irish and contemplating moving to Philippines probably for 6 month periods for now. I will be moving in "Somewhere" with my Filipina girlfriend and her 2 kids. I have been checkinh all the locations in South Manila, Quezon, Makati, Alabang, Bacoor etc. Like you say prices for houses vary a lot depending on size, location, security level. I am getting more and more apprehensive about the move, because of all the kidnappings, hijackings, assaults against Foreigners. Some of the latest were as a resault of criminals being tipped off by Airport police, about foreigners returning to manila. Is it as bad as the World media would make out, or is it simply about taking normal and basic precautions when moving about a big city.

I have never been in Phil though we have vacationed for the last 3 years in Koh Samui Thailand, last year for over 1 month

Thanks

August 25, 2010, Jan writes: Hi Mike,

Visiting the Philippines is the same as visting any other large country or city. Everybody has to take the necesssary precautions for his own safety. Always be alert on 'helpfull' people. The are not always as helpfull as they want to look like.
When you come to the Philippines, I wouyld advise you to book a hotel in advance and have you picked up from the airport by the hotel. Almost every hotel gives this service, and it is cheaper and safer than a taxi.

Manila has several areas where tourists go to buy some souvenirs. Aside from department stores and the Quiapo area there is another nice place to find something special and for low prices: Dapitan. Dapitan street is located not far from Welcome rotonda in Quezon City. At the Rotonda you have to go into Mayon street. You will find Dapitan after about 500 meters at your right. The wares ranging from indigenous fibers, paper, rattan, capiz, ceramics, wood and metal as gifts, home furnishings and accessories. Independently, adjacent streets have taken to similar trades and a Dapitan Tiangge, a 3-storey building offers customers and vendors more options.
