When you are an Expat in the Philippines, just like me, and have a small budget, you are not able to do the things you maybe like to do. Going out for dinner, buy a new computer, or other things you don’t have the budget for. You might think: I can find a job easily in the Philippines. Maybe so, but the jobs you are looking for are scarce or you need to work long hours and for Filipino wages. Aside from that you need a working permit and that is a complete different story. You might think: I’ll start my own business. Could be, but this is not that easy. You can never own a business in the Philippines on your own name. You need a Filipino citizen to be the co-owner for at least 60%. Aside from that you have to be very careful that you will not get robbed by your employees or even your Filipino partner. OK, you say, my Filipino wife can own the business. But never forget that you still have an extended family who likes to get also something from your profits…. You might also think: I’ll start my own business as an [...]

Related posts:

no new posts lately
Some of the frequent readers of this website are sending me emails why I haven't posted something lately.

Well, I briefly have to explain it here: It’s not that I am being sick or not feeling well but, due to a heavy workload (writing articles for others through oDesk) I was not able to leave the house much and write articles for my own website. It’s not that I am neglecting the site, not at all. But living in the Philippines on a small pension is not always easy, so every extra income is welcome. Through oDesk I get the chance to earn some extra money so I can live a little more comfortably and I hope to be able to buy a new faster computer soon. The articles I am writing can soon be found on Kelkoo, a comparison website in Dutch for electronic appliances like cell phones, laptops and more of that stuff. Aside from that I am also writing smaller articles for interior design on a daily basis. I do not know what website these are published. But I promise you all, that coming week I will write again for my own site. And I always keep [...]

Comments

April 23, 2011, interior designer writes: re welcome to post again, I'm glad you came back with these details to let us know

Related posts:

newsletter Expat in the Philippines
Dear [USER-NAME],

Almost every foreigner who enters the Philippines will get a visa for 21 days. Read about the latest updates if you are also entitled. If you are planning to stay longer you have to go to one of the many Immigration Offices in the country and apply for an extension. Your first extension will be 38 days. After that you are able to have more extensions for 2 months each time you apply. There are rumors that this can only be done until you are 16 months in the Philippines. But my experience is that even after 16 months there is still the possibility to have more extensions. If every Immigration Office knows these rules, I do not know. In those cases you better go to one of the bigger offices which usually can be found in Province capitals. The above is only if you are in the Philippines on a Tourist Visa. In cases that you came here and got the Balikabyan status first for 1 year, and after that got the tourist visa, this tourist visa starts on the date after your Balikabayan status has expired. So, it is possible to stay in the Philippines for much longer than 2 years [...]

Comments

April 1, 2011, angel writes: hello, i would just like to ask how much did you pay for the extension of tourist visa for every 2 months? thank you..

April 2, 2011, Jan writes: All information about the costs of extending visa can be found on the Department of Immigration website.

I've been getting different stories from diferent websites. Is it true that you don't need a Visa if staying less than 21 days? Is there any cost for entering the country? If we do require Visa's are we able to get them before we leave or should we just wait and get them on arrival? Any information would be appreciated.

Continuation from Hi, I’m Emily part 2 Here in the Philippines I have met a few other species of my kind. They are not that smart like me, but they are nice. Although sometimes they are annoying and asking for food whole day. I cannot understand why they do not have their own servants. I do not like them to come inside our house, but I allow them to be on the premises near one of the gates. Flor is putting some food there after lunch. The left overs from the table, mixed with some rice. Just like the so called ‘friendly cats’ from the neighborhood, I do not like other living creatures in or around my house. A few examples are those creepy lizards. They often walk on the ceiling where I cannot reach them, but once they dare to come down, they are MINE to play with. Other creatures I do not like are the cockroaches, because they are not funny to play with. The moment I got them and turn them on their back they do not move anymore. It seems to me that they are dead, so no fun anymore and I leave them alone.
Continuation from Hi, I’m Emily part 1 On a certain moment, I cannot remember the date because I do not have any idea about time, not even today, I was asked to go into a small cage. I didn’t like it but I did anyway, because there was no more furniture, no more napping place, nothing was left in the whole house. The house was completely empty. For that reason I didn’t make any trouble to go into that cage. They brought me to the car and we drove on for a few minutes. I presumed that we were going to the [...]

Related posts:

Emily
Emily is the highly domesticated house cat, room mate, a kind of child and most favorite pet of the owner of this blog and his wife.

It is more than two years now that we (me, Jan and Flor) made the move to the Philippines. Now it is time that I tell you MY story of our move to the Philippines. My name is Emily, I am almost 7 years old now (born March 26, 2004). I am a female cat but not that fanatic anymore after a man with a white dress did something to me while I was sleeping in his place. When I woke up I just wasn’t feeling the same anymore. I cannot explain it further so better forget what I just wrote. I am a member of the ‘Felis catus’ family. Some people just call us House cats, and I agree with that. In earlier times our species was also called Felis domesticus. Domus is the Latin word for ‘house’. We were named like that because we started to take over the houses from people. Before I continue with this story I have to Congratulate Jan with his 61st birthday today and a belated Happy Birthday to his Father-in-law who turned 96 yesterday. May they live a happy and healthy life. First of all I like to explain the first few words [...]

Related posts:

Emily
Emily is the highly domesticated house cat, room mate, a kind of child and most favorite pet of the owner of this blog and his wife.

A lot of people, who are planning to come to the Philippines, like to know more or less the costs of living in the Philippines. How much you actually need per month depends on the lifestyle you are going to live here and the needs you have. In this list I’m giving you some prices of basic needs for living in the Philippines. I realize that the list is far from complete. If you want to know more about specific items or products, don’t hesitate to leave a comment and I’ll try to answer it. Most prices (all in pesos) I?m mentioning here, vary from one location to the other. Personally I?m living nearby Manila and the prices mentioned here are from this region and from may 2009. Prices of food products are lower when bought on a wet market. 1 US$ is about 47.3 pesos. 1 Euro is about 65.5 pesos ( as of may 28, 2009) HOUSING Renting a house, check also my post about this subject by clicking here Depending on the subdivision it can go from 6,000 and more pesos a month. The state of security, location, building quality and type of house is forming the [...]

Related posts:

medical insurance is a must
When someone moves to the Philippines, or to other 3rd world countries, it is almost an obligation to have a good health insurance plan.
Living here isn’t so bad. Most things you need you can buy here. The malls are big and with a large variety of stores. There are a lot of restaurants everywhere. Practically every street corner has a McDonalds or Jollibee or other (fast food) restaurant. And they are cheap. I love the Philippines and it’s easy to live an expensive life if you are entering this country with enough funds; with lots of money you can live an easy life. If however you are not that well off, you can still live comfortably if you know what you are doing. Lots of expats are living from about 800 to 1000 dollars a month and they do fine. After you have left your home country you might, after some time, start missing some things from home. Maybe you would like the roads to be better, the weather not that warm and humid, more open spaces, your family and friends and so on. You might like better services like phone or internet and cable TV. Even electricity and water could be better. Traffic here is really bad, especially the region around Manila and other larger cities. All kinds of transportation is using the [...]

Related posts:

New Forum on Expat in the Philippines
Very soon I will start a new FORUM as part of this website.

Most foreigners, most likely retired, receive a pension and spend their most beautiful years of their life here. For people in Europe or similar places life may be easy at home while working at full salary. Once retired from a job and living from your pension – all looks very much different. However with the low cost of living and high quality of social life among friends and native neighborhood – all retirees enjoy a life, a dozen times more pleasant than at home. With houses starting around 100 US $ a month, or even beach front – with average rentals about 150 – 200 US $ monthly – here is a place to enjoy the evening decades or years of your post working life.
