Filipinos like to copy everything. And they also do so, a lot. They are masters in copying names, change it a little or having the same concept as other companies. There are lots of examples for it. Have you heard about the hamburger store Mang Donald ? (doesn’t exist anymore because of a law suit from McD). And there are many more examples like these. The most famous fast food chain in the Philippines is Jollybee, competing with McDonald to be the largest of fast food restaurants in the Philippines. Jollybee also has some restaurants in a few other countries in Asia. They sell burgers (like McD is doing) but also deep fried chicken. They have a ‘Jolly Bee’ mascotte in or in front of every restaurant, just like the famous Ronald McDonald. Often they also have a playground for children, just like McD. In the Philippines Jollybee is a bigger company than McD. At the end of this post more about these two restaurants. Other restaurants are also the ‘victim’ of plagiarism. A fried chicken restaurant with a name looking like that from Kenny Rogers. There is also a hairdresser named Hurry Cutter. The name is formed [...]

Comments

January 4, 2011, Anika Redhed writes: This is very funny indeed!
When you go to the markets in the Philippines and also on other places like Greenhills in Manila, you can buy clothing and shoes and handbags from all well known (and expensive) brands like Gucci, Lacoste and Jordans, just to name a few; for very low prices. For that low prices they cannot be real brand products, but have to be fake, pirated. I have been wondering where all these products are made; would it be local or imported. Just surfing over the net I came on a website where you can post something. One of the posts was a email from a factory in China offering all kinds of clothes of well known brands, shoes, handbags, toys, electrical equipment and a lot more. I was checking the website mentioned in this ‘post’ and didn’t find prizes but hundreds, no thousands of products from well known brands. Among them Handbags, shoes, clothing, barbi dolls, I-Phone, PSP and many more products. In that mail they are offering the following prizes: Wholesale : price is: (Including transport costs ) Sport shoes : USD29-34/PR Handbag : USD29/PC Clothes : USD10-45/PC Cellular telephone: USD175?210/PC Reading this and checking the site I can not believe [...]

Related posts:

bringing pasalubong
This time of the year a lot of Filipinos, living and/or working abroad, are visiting their home country to spend Christmas with their families.

Near the Recto LRT train station in Manila several people are trying to sell fake documents. All kinds of documents can be bought here. All kinds of identification papers and cards, from College to University degrees, drivers licenses, government papers like Police clearances and a lot more. They are just sitting on the sidewalk with their billboards and run away when they see a policeman coming. The owners and sales persons do not want to be photographed but I was able to got a few. The quality of the pictures is not the best but you can see that they offer a large variety of documents complete with seals, stamps and signatures. You probably know that on the internet you can also buy all kinds of false documents. But those you can buy on internet are from non-existing schools and universities. Here they really falsify documents from existing institutes and are selling them in the open in the street. Ordinary people like you and me (and especially foreigners) can’t see the difference with original documents and a lot of Filipinos have those fake documents to show where necessary. For example if you are doing business with a real estate agent [...]

Comments

March 3, 2010, Henk Zachtjes writes: Hi Jan,
Nice post, and all true, also.
Only a few corrections:
The Fixers, as they are called ("we can fix everything")don't try do sell fake documents. They just do. It's good business, the customers come to Recto from all over the country.
And not everything is fake. Some of the stuff, maybe even most, is the genuine thing, from the authentic governmental departments and agencies. They know some guys there, you see....
Not wanting to make a crooked line appear straight, but i can imagine why people take their resort to let fix some thing or the other...
The amount of official papers needed to open a bank account, apply for a job or just plain register as a new user for electricity can be so time energy and money consuming that the average pinoy better out of desperation just forget about moral issues for the time being.

And last but not least, the fixers maybe only run from police they don't know yet. I haven't ever seen someone running, though.
