Earlier I wrote about medical insurances , and also about getting your prescribed drugs from the different drug stores. Today I would like to tell you about our experiences and the costs for medical specialists and being admitted in hospitals. Flor went to a hospital with severe chest pains, and I got sick with Dengue lately. About a year ago I also had an attack of Meniere’s syndrom. It is about those three cases that I am writing here. But first this: The best way to go to a hospital is by own car or taxi. Even in very urgent cases, they hardly send an ambulance to pick you up. And there is always the traffic . . . In remote areas and in the provinces, quality hospitals are not widely available, and sometimes it will take a long time to go there. Bigger cities usually have one or more good hospitals or medical centers. It is my personal advise that once you live in the Philippines to orientate yourself about the available medical help you might need in the future. Get phone numbers and names of doctors etc, and how to go there. Always keep in mind that most [...]

Comments

October 9, 2010, David B Katague writes: Informative article on hospital procedures in the Philippines. You will need cash indeed even if you have medical insurance from US, before you could be treated, if you get sick in the Philippines. It is an archaic way of medical billing, but if you are in Rome, you must do what the Romans are doing. Thanks for your visit and comment.
Yes, even if you have insurance from USA or Europe, you need to pay the bill first. Good that I was able to pay with credit card. Almost all hospitals accept them these days. So there's no need to bring lots of cash.

October 11, 2010, Mark writes: The quality of health care in the Philippines is questionable, at best... I have been advised many times, that if you have something more than the common cold, then get to a hospital in Manila as quickly as possible...
I was in Cebu last year and got an insect bite on my ankle... It became swollen & infected in 2 days... I went to a private hospital in Cebu and was treated & prescribed antibiotics by the resident surgeon on duty... After 3 more days, the infection was worse, with red streaks running up my leg and I could not walk on it... By this time I was in Subic, where I went to a local country Doctor who cleaned out the wound and checked the prescription I was given in Cebu... He told me I had been given antibiotics for a lung infection... WTF!!! I did get better, but thought I was going to lose the leg there for a while...

October 11, 2010, Jan writes: Mark,

What can I say. You had a very bad experience here.
Those things also happen in USA or Europe. The only thing there is that such doctor can easily be brought to court for it. Here in the Philippines it is not that easy.
For that reason it might be wise to ask a second opinion in case of daubt or if you have the impression that they are fooling you.
Hope your legg has completely healed by now....

October 16, 2010, Maryette writes: Hi Jan,

You ask me a difficult question.
If you do not have an other relative / friend who can be trusted in handling your money, maybe you should go to the Philippines yourself.
Maybe there are other expats living nearby who are willing to assist you?

When someone moves to the Philippines, or to other 3rd world countries, it is almost an obligation to have a good health insurance plan. Costs for medical treatment and medicines are high and they will take a lot from your savings or small pension. A few days ago I received an e-mail from a man (Canadian) who was living here in the Philippines. He wrote me that he was 62 and has never been sick. He is working voluntarily with children somewhere in the Philippines. The man was seeking for help to raise money for medical treatment. Some moths ago he had a surgery on his stomach and this has cost him all his savings. Now he has had a small heart attack caused by a tumor near the urinary bladder. This tumor needs to be removed but he doesn’t have any money left to pay for it. He doesn’t have any medical insurance. This surgery will cost around 120,000 pesos. He asked me if there are organizations of charity in the Philippines who are possibly able to help him. He told me in a second mail that he tried to ask friends and family but he got no for [...]

Comments

September 4, 2009, Tom writes: By US standards P120000 for major medical is quite cheap however if you don't have it to pay that is another issue. It is too late for him to purchase insurance for this problem since he is already ill.
One possibility he might consider is returning to Canada for his care. Then return when he is better and then purchase insurance. I don't know if that is an option for him at this point.
I listed a few insurance companys on my site as well. I have insurance to cover my major medical but when I move I might look into additional insuranceas a back up.
I hope he is able to resolve his problem. he is in a very serious position.

September 4, 2009, Jan writes: Thanks Tom, for your comment.
Yes, I suggested him to return to Canada, but he has also French citizenship. He prefers to go to France. Let's hope he will find a solution.

September 5, 2009, Tom writes: The important thing is go somewhere and go now before it is too late. If he gets too sick to travel he will be in big trouble.

I was just reading about an Australian injured in India. To return home by air ambulance $250,000. If he gets well enough to travel on a stretcher on a regular airliner $75,000.

If your friend needs serious medical care I strongly advise him not to tarry. Get on the first plane home he can.

September 12, 2009, Nick writes: I'm a Filipino now working in the US. I am also not happy with the term 3rd world country. But the term is still used for a lot of coutries. Check wikipedia. I only can give general information about medical insurab=nces in the Philippines. This is because every person has different needs and wants to have different coverages.
You better ask your present medicare company about transfering to the PI and what their terms and conditions are.
If necessary you can always ask for qoutations at the companies I am mentioning on my site.

September 18, 2009, matt writes: Big problem is the cost of insurance.
