But today I am happy to announce that I am nominated, together with a few million others, to be the next “Best Husband in the World“. Do not ask me how I know this, but a special friend of mine send me already a picture of the medal for the final winner and it comes with a certificate issued by this company Best Husband certificate I only wonder how I get nominated because I am not really behave as such: I fart, I burp, I smoke too much, I spend too much time at my computer, do not bring my wife always where she wants, get up late every day, do not wash dishes and more like that. But I am still proud of the nomination!!
Being an Expat in the Philippines sometimes is difficult. Especially when you like to eat some food which normally only is available in your home country. And I like to cook from time to time my own Dutch food. Some specific Dutch dishes cannot be made in the Philippines because the right ingredients are not available. But today I was lucky to find something I’ve been longing for a long time. My dearest and I went to Santis Delicacies in Makati (Yakal street) and found one of the main ingredients to make Snert (a Dutch pea soup). The ingredient is celeriac or knolselderij in Dutch. Wikipedia link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celeriac It is imported from Europe probably and it is very expensive. We bought one piece of almost 700 grams at 631 pesos (915 pesos per kg). Other necessary ingredients are not that difficult to get but are sometimes rare in this country, like Leeks. There are vegetables available here they call leeks but actually they are a kind of big spring onions. We bought leeks already a few weeks ago when we have seen them and put them in the freezer. The same with the dried green split peas (dried green peas, [...]

Comments

January 15, 2012, Marvin Umbras writes: I was craving some swiss cheese for a long time. We can't find it up here in northern Philippines so when ever some one makes a trip to Manila I ask if they can look for it. Well, one neighbor went down there on a short trip and said he looked everywhere, no swiss. My wife went to a wedding in Manila after that and also reported being unable to find any. Now I was sad and could not understand why others were unable or unwilling to just buy some and bring it back. When living in Cavite several years ago I bought it all the time. Next was my turn, I had to make a trip down there for a medical procedure and when I had the chance I went to a couple different SM grocery stores and was surprised that no swiss cheese available. I'm still craving.

January 15, 2012, Jan writes: Hi Marvin,
I have seen fresh Emmenthal and probably other swiss cheeses in several stores. But you have to go to areas where more expats live, like Makati, Eastwood and Ortigas.
Supermarkets like: SM, Landmark, Rustan's and also Shopwise have a large assortment of cheeses from all over the world. But also Santi's has a nice assortment cheese (the owner is Swiss or Austrian) and imports to the Philippines himself.
Next time instruct your 'relatives' what and where to buy your cheese ans store it in the fridge ass much as possible! And pack it well before moving to the North.

January 15, 2012, Vicmico writes: Hey Jan,

been a long time since my last visit to yr website (btw, thanks for the good wishes for 2012), but we're still here in The Neths, and still planning our move to the Phils late next yr - Duma, as you may recall...
Since you are obviously craving for Dutch food (heaven knows why..)I put a link here to a webshop you may want to use if the craving gets too much: http://www.heimweewinkel.nl/
As for the question about cheese in the earlier response: We found Old Amsterdam (not exactly Swiss but at least 200% better than the US junk they sell as cheese normally) in the Robinsons supermarket in the new shopping mall in Dumaguete last year. Maybe an acceptable alternative??

After more than three years in the Philippines sometimes I want to eat typical Dutch food stuff. In general I can find all I want, it's just a few things which are difficult to find. Dutch Cheese is no problem, many supermarrkets sell it. Frico Cheese in several varieties, Old Amsterdamm is one of them.
Zuurkool I have found in cans, and recently I have found an address for celeriac (knolselderij) as you have read. Spruitjes (brussels sprouts) were imported from Australia and as big as tennis balls, but the taste was not good (the price was....).
Lucky we are living near Manila where much European and other western food is available (from time to time), for high prices that is.
I have checked this website you are mentioning. Many of those food items are available here (or similar items imported from other countries) and for similar prices. So there's no need to have it send here by them. And I eat rice as well....
It's only that sometimes ......

Related posts:

InterNations
The online community InterNations attracts thousands of members in search of new contacts abroad every month.
Many websites like to have a high page rank in Google. Only few are getting a high page rank. Top websites like Microsoft, Google, facebook and the like most of the time have a page rank of 10 out of 10. For smaller websites like blogs and similar websites a page rank of 3 out of 10 is already something. I am happy to announce that recently the EXPAT IN THE PHILIPPINES website got a pagerank of 4 out of 10. There’s no need to congratulate me. You the readers should congratulate yourself, because it is because of the many readers that this website has reached this. Thank you all.
More Britons than ever before are considering starting a new life abroad. But what are the key considerations people should make before taking their first steps to becoming an expat? There are many and leaving your home country to set yourself up in a foreign land is truly a huge life change. Britain is a tough place to live in at the moment. The seismic aftershocks of the recession continue to take their toll and unemployment is very high. People can get more for their money if they choose the right location to live in. Here are some guidelines to set you on the right track to a rewarding future as an expat. Without doubt, one of the key considerations should be whether you can afford to become an expat. You will need to have a significant sum in the bank to cover all eventualities, those planned for and the unforeseen. Initially, you may have to cover a few flights back and forth as you relocate and will have to quickly arrange the selling of your current house and perhaps some of your property. You must budget everything carefully. That includes the cost of your new home, which may also [...]

Comments

November 24, 2011, Federico Medina writes: I'm prepared to do whatever it takes to make the adjustment when I become an expat in the Philippines. My question has to do with the finances, and I'm hoping a financial savvy reader will respond. I'm 57 years old, have my own place in Makati, and have budgeted 120,000 pesos per month for the next 6 to 7 years. When I turn 63 or 64, that will increase to 170,000 pesos per month. Will this be adequate?

November 24, 2011, Jan writes: Federico,
Thanks for visiting my website.
Many expats would envie you for having such budget, especially that you have a place already. But it all depends on your daily needs and wishes. Your lifestyle is essential in answering this question.
Keep your life simple and you can save every month. Live the life fully and you might be short. Do not forget that Makati is getting more expensive by the day.

November 29, 2011, Tukaram writes: In Cebu would it be best to learn Cebuano or Tagalog? Cebuano is. Tagalog is the language of Manila only.

Tagalog is not an official language anywhere here. Ha, ha.

December 27, 2011, John writes: I think you mean 12,000 and 17,000. And yes you are very rich.

January 6, 2012, Bill writes: Ultimately you will need both, but Cebuano is the first priority. I recommend to practice speaking Cebuano with friends and acquaintenances, but also spend your private study time learning to read and speak Filipino/Tagalog.

"Filipino" (the national language), is similar to Tagalog (the common language in Manila and Central Luzon), but not the same. Speakers of languages other than Tagalog will appreciate it if you respect that distinction.

Many people that you encounter in public will speak English, but it will help you if you can establish some rapport in Cebuano first. Often they will be very happy to practice their English with you, but it will help if you can overcome their initial shyness or lack of confidence.

January 9, 2012, Jan writes: Bill,
I agree wityh you that speaking Cebuano is fine when you live in Cebu. But do not try to use this language in the rest of the Philippines. Filipino however is widely understood, all over the Philippines. Are experienced and skilled expats eligible to be hired for these jobs? The Philippines offers a few possibilities for foreigners to have a visa for longer stay.
You did not mention if you are married to a Filipino citizen. If so, your spouse can apply for a 13a visa.
If you are not married to a Filipino, you can apply for a SRRV visa, although there are costs and regulations involved.
If you are employed here by a large company, they can help you getting a long stay visa. Or if you are studying at one of the universities, there's a student visa.
You will find all information on the immigration website and for SRRV at SRRV website.
Good luck,

Very soon I will start a new FORUM as part of this website. In the comments on many posts, and also through private e-mail I receive many questions about life in the Philippines as an expat. Questions about health and insurances, questions about visa, about taxes, about legal papers, and many more ‘expat’ related questions. Although I have some knowledge about a lot of topics, I am not a specialist and I also do not pretend to know better or be a specialist. For that reason I was thinking why not ask my readers about their experiences, their knowledge and more and put this on a new website which will be called: ask expatinthephilippines I am still busy building this forum, testing and the like and after that I will move some posts from this website to the forum so we can start a discussion on some issues. The beauty of a forum is that everybody can be a member and contributor. After becoming a member you may start your own topic, ask questions and more of that kind. Other readers might know the answers and can help you probably. We stayed there for about two or three days and then I was asked to go in that basket again which I gladly did. The place was very small and I couldn’t go outside in the garden. I presumed that we were going to the [...]

Related posts:

Emily
Emily is the highly domesticated house cat, room mate, a kind of child and most favorite pet of the owner of this blog and his wife.
