Continuation from Hi, I’m Emily part 2 Here in the Philippines I have met a few other species of my kind. They are not that smart like me, but they are nice. Although sometimes they are annoying and asking for food whole day. I cannot understand why they do not have their own servants. I do not like them to come inside our house, but I allow them to be on the premises near one of the gates. Flor is putting some food there after lunch. The left overs from the table, mixed with some rice. Just like the so called ‘friendly cats’ from the neighborhood, I do not like other living creatures in or around my house. A few examples are those creepy lizards. They often walk on the ceiling where I cannot reach them, but once they dare to come down, they are MINE to play with. Other creatures I do not like are the cockroaches, because they are not funny to play with. The moment I got them and turn them on their back they do not move anymore. It seems to me that they are dead, so no fun anymore and I leave them alone. As [...]

Comments

September 17, 2011, ian writes: Does anyone know more about SRRV ?
Continuation from Hi, I’m Emily part 1 On a certain moment, I cannot remember the date because I do not have any idea about time, not even today, I was asked to go into a small cage. I didn’t like it but I did anyway, because there was no more furniture, no more napping place, nothing was left in the whole house. The house was completely empty. For that reason I didn’t make any trouble to go into that cage. They brought me to the car and we drove on for a few minutes. Then we get out and I was allowed to exit the cage in a strange place. It didn’t look like home at all. And I showed that to my servants. But I thought it was our new house. After they gave me some of my favorite food, I more or less agreed with the new situation and looked for a place to nap. We stayed there for about two or three days and then I was asked to go in that basket again which I gladly did. The place was very small and I couldn’t go outside in the garden. I presumed that we were going to the [...]

Related posts:

Emily
Emily is the highly domesticated house cat, room mate, a kind of child and most favorite pet of the owner of this blog and his wife.

It is more than two years now that we (me, Jan and Flor) made the move to the Philippines. Now it is time that I tell you MY story of our move to the Philippines. My name is Emily, I am almost 7 years old now (born March 26, 2004). I am a female cat but not that fanatic anymore after a man with a white dress did something to me while I was sleeping in his place. When I woke up I just wasn’t feeling the same anymore. I cannot explain it further so better forget what I just wrote. I am a member of the ‘Felis catus’ family. Some people just call us House cats, and I agree with that. In earlier times our species was also called Felis domesticus. Domus is the Latin word for ‘house’. We were named like that because we started to take over the houses from people. Before I continue with this story I have to Congratulate Jan with his 61st birthday today and a belated Happy Birthday to his Father-in-law who turned 96 yesterday. May they live a happy and healthy life. First of all I like to explain the first few words [...]

Related posts:

Emily
Emily is the highly domesticated house cat, room mate, a kind of child and most favorite pet of the owner of this blog and his wife.

Flor and I would like to announce proudly that we also have a lizard killer. Dave from Lizardpoop has his mother-in-law to do so, we also have one. Not as feared as Dave has, but yet…. The Philippines is a country with a large variety of animals and insects. Because of the warm weather, windows and doors are open all day and even in the night. Sometimes with screens to keep the mosquito’s out. Inside the houses small lizards can be seen at the ceiling or on other higher places. Especially late afternoon and in the evening. Those house lizards are about 4 to 5 inches in length (10 cm) and are catching little flies, mosquitos and other small insects. In the Philippines they are called ‘botiki’ or butiki. Cockroaches are nasty other insects, their size is about 1 inch (2 to 3 cm) and they come in the houses sometimes crawling, sometimes flying and are looking for something to eat. As you probably know already, my wife Flor and I brought our pet cat Emily to the Philippines when we moved here. Read about the difficulties at the customs on her arrival HERE. Cats in Europe and America like [...]

Related posts:

hello, my name is Emily part 3
Continuation from Hi, I'm Emily part 2

Emily, our cat, is doing fine in the Philippines. She is climbing the trees in our garden and has been exploring the neighborhood. A big part of the day she is sleeping and during the evening and night she is getting more active. She finds a lot of places to sleep during the day: just on a chair, or in her basket, and on our bed. During evening and night she will try to catch a house lizard (butiki). We have been finding some loose tails. A butiki looses it’s tail when someone catches it; the tail keeps on moving for some time to divert attention. She has met a few cats from the neighborhood but a few times she has come in running directly upstairs and hiding there. Most probably she has been fighting with one of the other cats from outside. She also came in already once limping with one leg. And a week ago she was wounded on a leg which is healing well. Sometimes when she is sitting in the window she watches the street and the moment she sees a specific male cat she will hide inside the house somewhere. Now she prefers to stay [...]

Comments

April 14, 2010, JOAN writes: I almost read all your blog and I really enjoy reading it...and one more I love your cat,,grrrrrrrrrr...I wish I have cat also, but I have hard finding it coz my sister dont like cat and aside from that we have a limited space,,,..Instead of having cat my resort is watching videos of cats in Youtube.and it really amaze Me,,regards to your cat Emily,,hehehehe,,,you too also and to your lovely wife,,.God Bless.

April 15, 2010, Jan writes: Hi Joan,

New and hectic again. On October 5 around 15.45 P.M. our plane landed at Manila Airport. It wasn’t very busy in the customs aerea so it didn’t take too much time to come into the country. All necessary ‘balikbayan’ stamps were given and we could go to the luggage claiming department. Two of our luggages were easy but the third wasn’t there. After everybody was gone and the luggage belt was empty we went to the serving officer and reported one piece missing. We weren’t the only one. There was a priest who just came back from Rome and he was also missing his luggage. And there was a lady also claiming one missing. After filling in some papers and checking in the computer it was clear that our third luggage was missing. According to the officer it could be that our luggage was still in Kuala Lumpur, so he advised us to wait for one more day. He noticed our telephone number and promised to call the moment the luggage arrived. We also got his phone number so we could contact him. Outside were several family members waiting for us. After they have welcomed us they drive us to [...]

Comments

August 9, 2009, rienus ernst writes: Jan

200 signatures and stamps….. ……..and a lot of bureaucracy….. “Welcome to the Philippines“ In Holland we have decided that our cat Emily should come to the Philippines a few days after us. So we contacted a specialized company VCK at Schiphol Airport to handle this for us. They were providing for a special airfreight cage where she could travel in. She was put on a flight on October 6 by KLM Cargo and arrived in Manila October 7 at 9.30 A.M. VCK in Amsterdam gave us already some papers and the address where to pick her up. So around 10 A.M. we were at the Cargo Department of Manila Airport to process the papers. First we had to get a airport entrance permit, it took about 10 minutes. After entering the premises we went to a office where we were given all the flight documents, including the passport from Emily. We were given a 12 step procedure document. The first step was done. Eleven to go. We were sent to the arrival area where we have to import the cat officially and pay some taxes (about 300 pesos). Also the import taxes have to be paid here (250 pesos). Some [...]

Comments

October 11, 2010, Mark writes: Oh dear... If the pets are flying the same plane as yourself, it is much easier and less hassle at the airport. So choose an airline who is willing to take your pets in the same flight as you are flying.
The time to make final plans and schedule our relocation has come. First we have to decide if we were going to bring all our furniture, so we asked for quotations for the move by sea container. Costs vary from 5000 to 8000 euro (7 to 10 thousand us dollars). That is a lot of money. We have been checking on the internet how much furniture costs in the Philippines. We found out that those prices were much lower than in Europe. It wasn?t the same durable quality like we were used to have in Holland but still they were quit good. So the plan is that we were going to bring only a few smaller items which were easy to pack into boxes for shipment. We know a Dutch-Filipino couple who are running a ?balikbayan boxes? service. (a service to send boxes from Overseas Filipino Workers from Holland and surrounding countries to the Philippines). We have contacted them and asked if they could assist in moving our things and how much it was going to cost. After agreeing they supplied us with a number of large boxes to pack our valuables, textiles, clothing and other items. It is also [...]

Comments

December 28, 2009, edith oducado writes: Hi,

Good that you find my website and check it out.
As an answer on your question you may send a text to the balikbayan service in The Netherlands. They are also sending things to the Netherlands as far as I know. maybe they have some space. For just smaller items and single boxes you can also use Philippine Postal Services.

we are moving to manila very soon, in fact we're packing up our house next week. a reputable moving company will be shipping our stuff but we just found out that since we are considered returning resident we are liable to pay for duties/tax on our shipment which is 50 percent of the assessed value (the value is dependent completely on the customs officials assessment and may not necessarily be the true value of the shipment!). knowing that a lot of our things have more sentimental value rather than monetary value i dread to think that i have to pay for them again when they are really old and well used... i have heard of situations where you can be exempted from paying the duties - do you have any advice on this? i have to say, that selling our things is out of the question as we don't have time to do that and we have a lot of furniture...
