Every year in the weeks before Christmas a parade is organised around the Araneta Center in Cubao, Quezon-City. Two years ago we happened to see this parade by accident because we were just visiting Cubao to do some shopping. See something about it HERE. Last year we didn’t have time but this year we went there again to see the ‘magical lights parade’. There were only a few floats, but I find them nice to see. The parade was accompanied by music bands, one of them with a strong rhythm and drums. Check the pictures below. Click on them to see a larger one.
MERI KRISMAS EBRIWAN, That’s what I read on a shop window in Ali Mall in Cubao today. Of course this text was made this way intentionally because Filipinos know how to write Merry Christmas Everyone properly. I find it funny, that’s why I took a picture to show you this. Near by Ali Mall is also a SM mall, and there I spotted a couple who just bought a Christmas tree, not a normal one but completely decorated. They were waiting for a taxi to bring them home with the tree. The picture is not that sharp because I had to take is from more than 20 meters and had to use the zoom function. Also the light was not very good, and I was a little in a hurry to have this picture taken. Just click on the picture to see it larger. EXPAT IN THE PHILIPPINES would like to wish all regular readers and visitors a Merry Christmas and already a Prosperous 2012.
Starting September, the Philippines is already thinking of the Christmas holidays and the coming Christmas season. Slowly you see malls getting decorated, playing Christmas songs and even on TV every news channel is announcing ‘how many days it still is until Christmas’. hardware stores in malls and department stores are displaying all their latest Christmas decorations and (artificial) trees in all colors. Thousands of blinking lights, accompanied with singing angels are telling you: Christmas is coming! Last week was a little strange. Christmas decoration was mixed up with Halloween decorations, but at the moment I am writing this, more and more shops, streets and places get (sometimes extravagant) Christmas decorations. A few days ago I was in Quezon City, Libis, Eastwood, where some employees were preparing a giant Christmas tree. Natural Christmas trees, as we know them in Europe or America, we do not know here at least not the large ones. It is too expensive to import them here. And aside from that they won’t last long in temperatures of around 30 degrees Celsius, and the season has only started. So what they do is: they build a metal structure and cover it with plastic green Christmas tree like branches, [...]

Comments

November 15, 2011, Vicmico writes: Nice pics Jan, thanks.

In the Philippines we call them the ber-months, which means that slowly houses and shops and malls shall be decorated with Christmas displays and lots of Christmas decorations, blinking lights and so on. When people meet they wish each other ‘Merry Christmas’. Christmas always comes early in the Philippines. The real Christmas day is December 25, like everywhere in the world, but because Christmas is the largest family celebration in the Philippines, they start early. In the week before Christmas many Filipinos going ‘home’ to their home towns. Busses are loaded during these days and making overtime to transport all the passengers. I have reported before of the many passengers at the Araneta bus station in Cubao, waiting for their transport or waiting to be able to buy a ticket. Now Christmas time has started, many people are starting to buy presents for their loved ones and not seldom they have to bring many gifts together with their luggage when they travel by bus and boat. One side effect of Christmas time is a higher criminality rate.
As you know Christmas is the most important holyday in the Philippines. As early as September people start decorating their houses, shops and malls start playing Christmas songs and starting decorating their windows and stores for the upcoming event. Those people who have visited the Philippines, or live in this country know that Christmas decoration is not always removed right after Christmas but most of the time just after January 6, the holyday of Three Kings.Private houses and smaller shops do not even remove the decor, they just do not lit the lights during the year. Christmas trees and other decorations are stored for the next year right after January 6. Last Saturday, February 5 we were in Cubao, in AliMall and there I spotted this large window full with angels and a Christmas setting. Have they forgotten to remove it? or do they just leave it untill next Christmas? The most celebrated holyday in this country is only 11 months away….
Every year lots of people have to think what color they will choose to decorate the TREE. In the Philippines many people do not have a Christmas tree and do not have to think about it, simply because they cannot afford to have one, or they live in such small houses that there is no space to put one, not even a two foot tree. When you go to malls this time of the year a large variety of trees is available. Not the real pine trees, they are too expansive (imported fresh ones), but nicely decorated fake trees. There is that much decoration that you do not see the tree at all. The only thing missing is the typical pine tree smell, but that is available as spray, so why complaining? Shops are offering them complete with decorations for prices from 4000 and up (depending on the size and number of decorations). I took some pictures to show what is fashion this year. Every year you can see that the colors are different. I have the impression that this year the classical red with white, but also bronze and gold are very popular. I have seen bright yellow and [...]

Comments

December 5, 2010, Marvin writes: Here is our little humble tree

December 5, 2010, Jan writes: A very humble tree !! thanks for posting.

Related posts:

Preparing for New Years evening
Already several days a few youngsters in our neighbourhood are firing firecrackers.
Christmas time in the Philippines starts the moment there is an R in the month. That means the moment it is September you will find a large variety of Christmas decoration in stores, malls and on markets. In stores, malls and other public places they are having Christmas songs played through the speaker systems. And even people are wishing eachother a ‘merry christmas’ already. This is typical Filipino. Christmas is by far the most important time of the year. The last week of December is always very quiet in large cities. Most of the factories and offices are closed, and the employees have gone home to the provinces to spend Christmas with their relatives. I reported last year about the migration to the provinces from the Araneta bus station in Cubao. Check that post HERE. People travelling to the province in the days before Christmas sometimes have to wait for more than 12 hours to get a ride in one of the many busses. The Araneta bus station will be loaded with passengers for days and nights. And everybody will be bringing lots of ‘pasalubung’ (gifts for the family). See a post about this subject HERE. 'Celebrating' Xmas in September is a nonsense. It removes the true joys of what Xmas is all about and worth celebrating. Also it is not just about adjusting to their way of life. Filipinos have their parties on Xmas eve, but come Xmas day they all disappear and go home. Filipinos are friendly and inquisitive but when pushed have rather little tolerance for foreign cultures anyway. Foreigners permanently living here are NOT guests, unlike visitors to the Philippines.

As a Dutch I also look different at Christmas in September. In my eyes it is also much too early. In Holland shops and the like are NOT allowed to have Christmas displays before December 6. On that day we celebrate Sinterklaas. See the story about Sinterklaas and Santa Claus HERE and also HERE, both an interesting read and to know more about these persons.

Related posts:

christmas blues
Santa likes to sing the Christmas blues for all readers of EXPATINTHEPHILIPPINES.COM :

Tropical countries usually have only two seasons: the wet season and the dry season. The Philippines has also different seasons. Many people are laughing about it and say there are 3 seasons: the rainy season, the hot season, and the very hot season. Some people might say that the typhoon season is number 4. At the moment (december) is is the coolest time of the year. The sun is in the southern hemisphere and standing much lower at noon. Daytime is shorter by about half to one hour compared to the hot season. Night temperatures (early morning) can go as low as 18 degrees Celsius. But the moment the sun starts shining it goes up fast to a comfortable 25 to 30, depending on the weather (sunny or not). I would like to compare the weather in this time of the year to a good summer in Northern Europe. Lots of sunshine with a shower from time to time and temperatures good for our white skins. Actually December and January are the best months for foreigners to visit the Philippines. December might be a lesser month because of the (much heavier than usual) traffic in this month. Temperature wise though, [...]

Comments

December 15, 2009, Dave DeWall writes: Hi Jan, yes, I can tell the difference in the weather since arriving here only this past July.
It’s Christmas time. In colder countries this means snow and cold weather. Not in the Philippines. It’s warm as always with temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius every day and lots of sun. Yet I spotted a snow man in the street in Marikina. “How is that possible?”, would you ask. Well it’s simple. It is just part of the Christmas decoration used in the Philippines. Near to the snow man they have created a large Christmas tree made of presents, about 5 meters high. I took these pictures during daytime and in the evening so you can see the difference. click on a picture to see a larger one Flor and I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the readers of this blog a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year ! We have been reading that you were living in Provident village. You wrote that your house had a lot of damage.
We are living near Masinag and we visit Marikina regularly to go to the market.
Thanks for your wishes and express ours to your family too.

December 2, 2009, Jan writes: Hi Sunshine,
