When I first started this website I decided that the main language would be English for a number of reasons. English is world-wide spoken and understood by many people English is the second official language in the Philippines English can easily be translated into other languages (automatically by Google or any web browser) Expat in the Philippines celebrates the 3rd anniversary of its existence this month and it is good to see what I have done in these three years. So a few statistics: 284 active posts (it was more but I removed several which were not accurate or not relevant anymore) 1289 comments (plus a number which are lost after a crash in the first year). Many comments are also done but are removed by me because of the spam nature or people who try to add their commercial links this way; I check every comment on this and do not allow it. 135 newsletter subscribers, visitors who like to be informed from time to time about updates and new posts on this website I am proud to say that I have 2 guest bloggers who made a valuable contribution to write an article about a part of the [...]

Comments

November 22, 2011, Dave DeWall writes: Congratulations on the third year anniversary, Jan!
Hi everybody, This is a direct report from Pioduran Albay. Yesterday we have celebrated the 96th birthday of my father in law. Already early in the morning two pigs were butchered to serve as the meal for all family and guests. One of the two was prepared as Lechon, grilled above charcoal and filled with lemon grass and some spices. This is a delicacy in the Philippines. Ask any Filipino in the world if he likes Lechon and they all will say: Masarap! (delicious). The other one was cooked in a number of other Filipino dishes. Cooking and preparing started already early in the morning. In other years the cooking was done in open air on wood fire. This time, because of the rain, it had to be done covered from the rain in a shed. Around 9 AM a special mass was held in the Catholic church in town for the celebrant and the family. During the afternoon several guests arrived and were served the food prepared. A large number of pictures was taken, all family portraits. In the early evening the old man and me shared a beer. He usually doesn’t drink anymore because of his health, but [...]

Comments

January 11, 2011, Opus writes: I'm one of those few who don't like Lechon or pork much.
First I would like to wish everybody a happy New Year and a prosperous one as well. From January 3 Flor and I are going to Bicol, Albay again. We will stay there about 10 days. Every year we have to go there after the New Year to celebrate the birthday of my Father In Law. He will be 96 this year. He only has a few wishes, and one of them is that as much family as possible will attend this day. He expects a party, with lots of food for all guests and a dance party in the evening. Last year about 100 people from the village and family members were there to celebrate his birthday. It will not be much different this year. Every day he is asking his youngest daughter, where he is living, if the preparations are going fine. And he keeps on insistsing in having a large party with lots of food and a dance. This means that I will not have the time to check my mail every day. There is Internet access in the village but not very fast and there is not always a 100% electricity supply. I have prepared [...]

Related posts:

much rain in Bicol
It keeps on raining in Bicol.
The whole world is celebrating Christmas and preparing for the New Year Celebration. Some 40,000 people in Albay province, Philippines, are not. They are staying in evacuation centers because their houses are situated in the 8 km danger zone around Mayon Volcano. I feel sorry for them, not to be in their homes this time of the year. Source of the pictures: HERE Flor and I are leaving next week for Albay to celebrate Flors fathers birthday on january 6, he is turning 95, and I will be celebrating my 60th birthday on january 7. Every year we are celebrating our birthdays together in Bicol. I hope to be able to make some pictures from Mayon myself. Fortunately Mayon usually just flows or erupts in a more limited area. Hope your family is in a safe area.

December 30, 2009, Jan writes: Mayon is known for long lasting eruptions. Only rare that there is a 'big bang'.
The most dangerous in volcanic eruptions are the gasses coming out. Those are highly toxic and hot. They can burn a whole area and destroy everything.
Mayon has several lahar flowing areas. A kind of canals where the lava flows, more or less regulated. When you go there you can see them clearly along the high way between Legazpi and Tabaco. They are colored dark grey to black, with large rocks coming from the volcano.
I will try to shoot some pictures when I will be there.

My wifes family lives at a safe distance of around 40 km from the volcano. Just some ashes have been falling there.

October 25, 2010, Ron writes: I was amazed at the mayon volcano and it wasn't doing anything like that when i was there, my wife is from the area, i kept thinking what it would be like to grow up with it always in the background.

October 25, 2010, Jan writes: Hi Ron,
