Hi everybody, This is a direct report from Pioduran Albay. Yesterday we have celebrated the 96th birthday of my father in law. Already early in the morning two pigs were butchered to serve as the meal for all family and guests. One of the two was prepared as Lechon, grilled above charcoal and filled with lemon grass and some spices. This is a delicacy in the Philippines. Ask any Filipino in the world if he likes Lechon and they all will say: Masarap! (delicious). The other one was cooked in a number of other Filipino dishes. Cooking and preparing started already early in the morning. In other years the cooking was done in open air on wood fire. This time, because of the rain, it had to be done covered from the rain in a shed. Around 9 AM a special mass was held in the Catholic church in town for the celebrant and the family. During the afternoon several guests arrived and were served the food prepared. A large number of pictures was taken, all family portraits. In the early evening the old man and me shared a beer. He usually doesn’t drink anymore because of his health, but [...]

Comments

January 11, 2011, Opus writes: I'm one of those few who don't like Lechon or pork much. The only thing I indulge in is fried pig skin and bacon. Karaoke doesn't do much for me either. My fiancee would serenade me with love songs and encourage me to join her. I always say, "No thanks, Baby. I'll just sit here and watch how beautiful you sing!" She doesn't believe me!

January 11, 2011, Jan writes: Hi Opus,

We will stay there about 10 days. Every year we have to go there after the New Year to celebrate the birthday of my Father In Law. He will be 96 this year. He only has a few wishes, and one of them is that as much family as possible will attend this day. He expects a party, with lots of food for all guests and a dance party in the evening. Last year about 100 people from the village and family members were there to celebrate his birthday. It will not be much different this year. Every day he is asking his youngest daughter, where he is living, if the preparations are going fine. And he keeps on insistsing in having a large party with lots of food and a dance. This means that I will not have the time to check my mail every day. There is Internet access in the village but not very fast and there is not always a 100% electricity supply. I have prepared [...]

Related posts:

much rain in Bicol
It keeps on raining in Bicol.
From Pioduran, Albay jeepneys are going in the direction of Ligao. After Ligao they continue to Legaspi, Tabaco or Polangui. It is a ride of about 40 kms through the mountains. There are not that many jeeps but a lot of passengers. It is in places like this that you often see a jeepney full with passengers inside, but also on top of the vehicle. Passengers just want to have a ride, no matter what. They agree to sit on top, even when it rains. Some people even prefer to sit on top, rather than inside.
Some 95 years ago, January 6, 1915 a boy was born in the Philippines. His parents named him Luciano. Almost all his life he lived in Pioduran, Albay. He married and got 10 children. All of them have started families of their own and are doing well. He is a great-grand father many times. His health is still OK. Only his sight and his hearing are not good anymore. He still has a good appetite and is moving through the village a lot. Everybody knows him and respects him. The ‘pater familias’ celebrated his 95th birthday on January 6, 2010. Although I am not able to communicate well with him, I have a lot of respect for him. For this reason I would like to honor him on this website. During my stay in Pioduran last week I offered him a beer. Normaly he doesn’t drink alcoholic beverages anymore. But this time he made an exemption. For this occasion we have a picture made with the both of us drinking the beer. Thank you, Pay, for having a lovely daughter: my wife! .
This post I am writing directly from Pioduran Albay. The hometown of my in-laws. This is the place where my father-in-law lives with his youngest daughter and her family. It’s also the place where we are staying right now. It is fun staying here because whole day family is passing by and going again. It is a lively house. No dull moments. I do not have that much time to work on this blog, and aside from that I do not have the right facilities to publish pictures. The computer I am using is slow and doesn’t have the right software to do some photoshopping. Internet is slow, and we have experienced a few brown-outs already the last few days. One lasted for several hours. On such moments I enjoy staying in the province: No loud music, no karaoke. Just a tricycle passing by every now and then. There’s not much roosters in this neighborhood, so I can sleep wel and a little late in the morning. When I walk in the street, many children come to me and offer their hand to bless. This is a common thing in the Philippines. It shows that the person is respecting you. My relatives live in Benodegahan. Originally I was from narrio Mamlad. My parents live in the Malidong cemetery and also my two sisters. Out of four siblings, I am the only survivor because my only brother had left some years ago but I don't know in what cemetery in Pioduran he was laid to rest. I have so many relatives in Benodegahan and in Mamlad bearing the last name of MOLAR. If ever somebody knows someone by this last name, please extend my warm regards to them because I have been absent from that place some 60 years more or less. I now live in USA and almost at sundown. Thanks.

April 1, 2011, Jan writes: Hi Mr. Molar,
My wife, who is from Banawan, Pioduran, had a classmate with the family name of Molar and he was from Binodegahan. He must be in his 50's by now.
The old cemetary in Pioduran doesn't exist anymore. All remains were transfered to a new cemetary in Caratagan.

Related posts:

beauty parlor in Pioduran, Albay
When I was walking through Pioduran and surroundings I suddenly spotted this sign along the road.

Coming monday, January 4, my wife Flor and I are going to Pioduran, Albay. We are going to celebrate the 95th birthday of my father-in-law on January 6, and my own 60th birthday January 7. Already several times we have celebrated our birthdays together, and there’s no reason to change it. My father-in-law is expecting us to go there and we will not dissapoint him. He is still in good health for his age. His hearing and his sight are giving him little problems, but that’s all. maybe I’ll be able to go to Legaspi to see the Mayon Volcano. The alert level has been lowered so the most spectacular images cannot be made anymore. But I will try to shoot some pictures of it. We will stay there for a week and I am not sure if I can answer e-mail or check my website regularely. But I will do my best to get on-line from time to time. So be patient and come back to see my post about this trip. I will drive myself all the way (almost 600 km, one way) and I’ll try to do it in one day. So there will be not much [...]

Comments

January 5, 2010, Paddy Mee writes: Happy and peaceful new year to you both in the philippines.
