My wife Flor and I have decided not to move to an other place, but to stay in our rented house for some time. It is a two story house, single detached which is build some 25 years ago. The house has been renovated over the years and is doing fine to our standards. It is spacious, has a lot of fresh air around it and is situated in a quiet subdivision close to Manila but still in Antipolo City.
The landlord recently has renovated the roof, gutters and some other things. We have decided to do some painting in the house to make it more bright inside. Several doors are painted dark brown as well as the windows and window frames. We are giving them a brighter color: creme and beige colors. Ceilings and walls are painted white to make it looking brighter inside.
This is one of the reasons I didn’t post anything the last few days, I was too busy sanding and painting.
Now that I’m busy doing this I also get a closer look at the quality of the paint jobs which has been done before. Not very well I must say. Like so many things in the Philippines, it must have been done by amateurs who do not know anything of painting.
I was lucky to have brought a few good paint brushes from Holland because paintbrushes available in the Philippines are of a poor quality. That is, I haven’t seen good ones yet in hardware stores and the like. Perhaps they are available in some larger construction supply stores, but I haven’t found them yet.
The available paint dries already on the brush, so you have to work fast for a good result. Larger areas such as doors can be done by roller but even then the paint dries too fast for a good result.
If there are readers wanting to paint their house themselves (fort a better result) take care for good brushes. Maybe you have to import them yourselves.

Filipino time:

Filipino paint is, indeed, of poor quality – but it is also very cheap. We are presently, here in Australia, painting our house and have to pay ninety Australian dollars for 4 liters of Dulux weathershield. In Cebu we could get good imported American paint at Acer, for much higher prices of course than the Filipino paint. In good Filipino hardware stores you should also be able to buy good brushes. I once bought a rather expensive camel hair brush there that became a real favourite of mine.
Good luck with your painting job.
Thanks for the tip, I will check it out and hope to find good brushes.
Jan I left a reply and it disappeared into thin air.
comments only appear after I have seen them and allow them to be shown. This is to avoid scam or unwanted advertising.
Aren’t you a bit too worried about that? The two main Dutch language fora on the Philippines do not have this delaying moderation function. An unwanted post can always be removed post-facto.
Arie,
I don’t like my website full of advertisements or links to commercial sites. I have the idea that some people are getting paid for commenting on websites like mine and place links to commercial sites on it.
Soemtimes I also got blank comments, but with pictures included. These pictures are containing virusses. Once you click on them, you have a lot of problems on your system.
On the other hand: I do not have a forum, just a website where someone can comment on my writings.
But thanks for your thoughts and concern.
Hi Jan, we are going to be doing some painting at our “Compound” in Guimaras later this year. Guess I will have to check out Ace Hardware for some good quality paint and brushes. Haha, I noticed I said “we” are going to being doing painting. My brother-in-law that lives here will be doing that, and he does pretty good work.
Hi Dave,
Good to know that you are getting a little active too. Even as inspector !!
I still didn’t find the kind of brushes I want. Ace hardwarestore doesn’t have the ones I want, nor Wilcon hardware. Good I saved a few old ones which I found between my tools (shipped from Holland).
I wish you a lot of success in the painting.
Hello Jan, thanks for the very useful info about banking. Since we are still in the packing and disposing fase i found some tool, spanners and such. They have European sizes. From my previous stay in the Philippines – 30 years back – i remember a lot of American sizes of tools – you are a do-it your selver – should i bring them or select them and sell the rest. Offcourse i will bring some kwasten along. It is nice to have such chances to ask some small but relevant questions. – Thanks Willem
Willem,
Quality tools are always better than the usual tools here. If you have the opportunity: bring them, all of them. Also electric tools like drilling machine, electric screwdrivers, sawing machines. Oil them well before packing and sending. Lots of tools get rusted very fast here (hot and moist climate).
Good paint brushes (kwasten) are simply not available here. I mean the round ones with a little rope around the hairs. These brushes are the best in the world. They only need to be made from real hair (cow, horse, camel; preferably not pig). Bring different sizes.
Brushes here available are of the ‘throw-away-after-use”. And they loose lots of hair. Many are also having nylon hair= bad paint job.
Did you try True Value Hardware? I don’t know that they have them but it is another place to look.
I’ll keep your suggestion in mind when I ship my stuff. Wouldn’t hurt to throw in a few painting supplies. I already have wire nuts and several types and sizes of wall anchors on the list.
Thanks Tom,
I will see there.
