Emily, our cat, is doing fine in the Philippines. She is climbing the trees in our garden and has been exploring the neighborhood.
A big part of the day she is sleeping and during the evening and night she is getting more active. She finds a lot of places to sleep during the day: just on a chair, or in her basket, and on our bed.![]()
During evening and night she will try to catch a house lizard (butiki). We have been finding some loose tails. A butiki looses it’s tail when someone catches it; the tail keeps on moving for some time to divert attention.![]()
She has met a few cats from the neighborhood but a few times she has come in running directly upstairs and hiding there. Most probably she has been fighting with one of the other cats from outside. She also came in already once limping with one leg. And a week ago she was wounded on a leg which is healing well.
![]()
Sometimes when she is sitting in the window she watches the street and the moment she sees a specific male cat she will hide inside the house somewhere.
Now she prefers to stay inside the house. It is much safer here I guess.![]()
There is also one cat from which she is accepting her presence, even in our garden.
This white cat is called “blondina” by us and is fed with the left overs from our table. This cat has blue eyes, but her right eye is half brownish. You can see it on the picture.
All together we are happy to have brought Emily to the Philippines. She might be naughty and playful, sometimes annoying? but we love her a lot

Jan,
Enjoying your website tremedously and I appreciate you sharing your valueable experiences in the Philippines. Approaching 60, I am seriously considering leaving the rat race and am trying to find the best place to spend my retirement. The Philippines have always had my interest and I am very close to checking out some of the sites in person. I like peace and quiet, sun and sea, and have a small island in mind. (Bantayan). Two questions you may be able to help me with. First, have you managed to find a medical insurance plan for you and your wife? Lastly, in your blog you mention some expats live on $1000/month. I realise that the lifestyle on that amount of money depends on where in the Philippines you prefer to spend your time, but on average, will this appro. amount aford you comfort and how many people will that support?
Kindest Regards,
Henk.

Henk,
Thanks for stopping by on my website.
Just today I have posted a page about health care for expats in the Philippines, check for it on the home page or in the archives.
About the costs about living in the Philippines I wrote already a few times in different pages, but I?m planning to write one more with a lot of numbers and figures.
Many Foreigners live on an amount below US$ 1000. For myself I am one of them, and I am doing fine. It all depends on ones needs and requirements. A very simple life costs about 200 to 300, but the moment you like to go out from time to time and dine in fancy restaurants, this amount won?t be enough.
