Some people are saying that Easter in the Philippines goes with cruelty. The Filipinos themselves see it as a part of their culture and their religion.
Every year on Good Friday (this year on April 2, 2010) several men are crucified in a village named Cutud some 80 kms north of Manila. This kind of cruelty is done voluntarily by these men.
An other kind of cruelty is done by many people: coloring and selling chicks to the people for their children to play with. I do not know how they color these young animals and what kind of paint is used, but it seems not normal to me. Animals should NOT be treated like this.
In a street in Quezon City I photographed these little chicks today. Sitting in a plastic basket and some rice as food. No water to drink. Small children, about 5 or 6 years old are playing with them, taking them out in a small cup, walking in the street with them. Sometimes the chicks fall from about 4 feet on the street, shakes his feathers and tries to escape. The children catch them again and put the animals in the basket. That’s the time I got my camera ready to witness these cruelties in the Philippines.![]()
My wife and I are great animal lovers and respect animals a lot. All people should do the same. Animals are no toys for children. Buying animals as toys for children should be forbidden. One should realize that young animals grow bigger and are not that cute anymore. Children usually loose their interest after a few days or weeks. Buying pets is a long term commitment. People should be aware of that.
