Many of these fiestas are worth seeing because of the beautiful costumes, nice decorated floats and good local food and handicraft you will find there.
Recently I was visiting a subdivision to see if there was a nice house to buy when I spotted a remarkable fence around an open lot. The metal structure on top of the wall was formed in musical script with many notes and musical symbols. The owner of the lot must love music a lot or be a musician I suppose. No house was build yet, just the fencing was made so far and already a few years old seen the state it was in. If the music can be played I do not know, maybe someone from my readers can try and tell us. But I think it’s all just fantasy notes.
In my effort to understand the Filipino language and the Filipinos in particular, I still have lots of problems with the expression: hainakuh ! It is also written on other ways, but this is the most common way. There are many t-shirts available in shops with this expressive text, but no one can give me a clear explanation what exactly it means. According to my better half it has many meanings depending on the context. It varies from: It’s a pity to What now? One detail is that the logo comes from the Dutch beer Heineken and is used to make these t-shirts. I do not like Heineken beer, and never have. My beer in the Philippines is San Miguel pale Pilsen. But that’s aside the point. The reason I am writing this post is that Heineken is a Dutch brand and I am Dutch. For that reason I noticed that Filipinos are using the logo for one of their expressions to be printed on t-shirts. As you can see the pictures are similar, even the used colors. All original texts of the logo have been changed into (funny) Filipino. Here’s what I could read and I would like to [...]

Comments

January 18, 2012, Boy writes: Shalom!............................................

January 29, 2012, Joe writes: Here's the translation (i think) you've requested.

French is a difficult language, especially proper writing, even sometimes for native French people. When I was in high school, a loooooooong time ago, French was one of the foreign languages we had to learn. It became very handy when a few years later I moved to the French-speaking part of Belgium to work in a restaurant. Until today I can still speak and understand French comfortably. But that’s not the reason I am writing today. Today I would like to show you a picture of a hair salon in Cubao, along Tuazon Ave. The spelling of cheveaux is not correct and the way this is written is a mixture of ‘hair’ and ‘horses’. Let me explain: One single hair is: cheveu All the hair on your head is: cheveux (this is the regular plural form for words ending -eu in French) {an other example for it: jeu (game), plural jeux (games)} A horse in French is le cheval, plural is les chevaux {other example of this kind of words and the plural: le journal (newspaper), les journaux (newspapers)} The word cheveaux does not exist in French, it is just mis-spelled. But researching the Internet gave me some more faulty [...]

Related posts:

hair salons also have funny names sometimes
Recently I spotted this hair salon in the Ortigas area.
Many Filipinos speak some English and a few know to express themselves very well in this second official language of the Philippines. Writing English is another thing. I have posted already several times about the way Filipinos are advertizing their shops or write in English. This time I found a Cell Phone repair shop who wants to do all kinds of repairs on these generally used small devices. They even want to fix the hardwear or the softwear of the cell phone. We all know what they mean, but it shows again that spelling is not the strongest point of the Filipino. Why they are not more carefull in it? They just write it the way they hear it. One more example: Recently a new movie has been released. It has the very well-known bakla Vice Ganda in the leading role and although I haven’t seen the picture, I think it is a Filipino version of the movie Private Benjamin with Goldy Hawn from 1980. The title of this Filipino movie is: “Praybeyt Benjamin”. You can see a trailer HERE. Although the storyline is completely different, the Filipinos have copied the title, put a ‘semi-female’ in the leading role, made [...]

Comments

November 21, 2011, dolphin writes: I will have to disagree with you when you say that spelling is one of our weakest points -- grammar, maybe. it's like you're saying 'generally Filipinos Filipinos often misspell the words.' How many misspelled words do you see against the number of correctly written adverts? Question is, where do you see all these? In the countryside? Maybe you can find a lot there (for many reasons), but a lot does not mean it's too common that you see them side by side. Anyway, when I visit my father's hometown in the countryside, along the way I hardly see misspelled words. I've been to many provinces, I saw many, but as I've said, collectively, these mistakes are not common.

I must say that on the part of a foreigner the sight is common especially if they have seen 10, 20, while for the locals (because we are more familiar with ours)we don't notice and we don't think so. Most of the misspelled words can be seen only on small shops owned by small time biz people.

With regard to 'Praybeyt Benjamin'I think you still aren't familiar with Pinoy humor. This is common. We do it often for fun. To appeal to readers and audience. To make the subject, issue, or whatever an interesting one to read or watch. We know this is incorrect. But you know, Pinoys are funny people.

November 22, 2011, Isagani Cruz writes: Haha, Filipinos got it from Americans! (and watch less American movies)

December 27, 2011, John writes: Ha, ha. Pinoy are not funny people, they just can't read and write. It's not limited to English. I can write in Filipino better than most people born here!

Language here is strictly a spoken thing in the Philippines. Old blokes talking about daily life, or hens gossiping. That's why there is no such thing as Filipino literature.
Many websites like to have a high page rank in Google. Only few are getting a high page rank. Top websites like Microsoft, Google, facebook and the like most of the time have a page rank of 10 out of 10. For smaller websites like blogs and similar websites a page rank of 3 out of 10 is already something. I am happy to announce that recently the EXPAT IN THE PHILIPPINES website got a pagerank of 4 out of 10. There’s no need to congratulate me. You the readers should congratulate yourself, because it is because of the many readers that this website has reached this. Thank you all.
Sometimes I think that factories all over the world are dumping their extra stock or faulty (bad quality goods) in the Philippines. When you look at furniture or other household goods you can clearly see that the quality is not always that good. OK, prices for such stuff is also low, but when you purchase something like that and within a few months it is broken and cannot be used anymore so you need to buy a new one it becomes an expensive item. Durability of many goods, available in the Philippines, is much lower than similar items in the US or Europe. Are factories not able to produce better goods here? Or do they do this on purpose to keep prices low? Filipinos do not like to buy items produced in the Philippines; they prefer to buy imported goods and at a very low price. Is this the reason that manufacturers outside the Philippines are producing such bad products? These are just thoughts (and experiences), coming to my mind while I was preparing for this post. Now the real reason to write this post: Recently I spotted one of the many imported items, which is ment to be used [...]

Comments

November 8, 2011, Charles Harman writes: I think you are correct just about every toy I buy for my kids is broken before the day is done. JOSE RIZAL, the national hero of the Philippines and pride of the Malayan race, was born on June 19, 1861, in the town of Calamba, Laguna as the son of Francisco Mercado y Alejandro and Teodora Realonda y Quintos, so the name on his birth certificate was “Jose Protacio Mercado y Realonda” and that was the name he used until he enrolled at the Ateneo de Manila in 1872. He was the seventh child in a family of 11 children (2 boys and 9 girls). Both his parents were educated and belonged to distinguished families. Paciano feared that Rizal’s association with him, by their common surname, would have prevented Rizal from being accepted at the Ateneo. So, with Paciano’s assistance in obtaining a false birth certificate, Jose Mercado became “Jose Protacio Rizal”. “Rizal” was picked because it was [...]

Comments

October 3, 2011, namisan writes: I'm a filipino and Jose Rizal is my greatest hero and idol.
