The Filipinos celebrate many fiestas throughout the year. Every city, town, barangay and subdivision has its own fiesta. Filipinos are happy people and they like to celebrate something. For that reason they celebrate every occasion with smaller or bigger fiestas. Many of these fiestas are worth seeing because of the beautiful costumes, nice decorated floats and good local food and handicraft you will find there. Expat in the Philippines tries to make a list of the most important and most worthy to watch fiestas and festivals and events in the Philippines.
I am not sure how to call this: daredevilry, recklessness, foolhardiness, or temerity, but one thing is for sure: it is STUPID. As an Expat in the Philippines I notice many strange things, and many times I am reporting about it. A colleague blogger: “The Travelling Fool” currently spends some time in Manila and spotted someone working on a high spot on an other hotel. The man is not wearing any protection in case he is making a fall of about 40 stories. Maybe he is sure nothing will happen to him? Or maybe this is a proof that life is almost worthless in the Philippines. Interested to see more pictures of this man? See the whole story on the website of The Travelling Fool Share and Enjoy

Comments

February 4, 2012, Ben writes: Jan,
I sincerely believe that most Filipinos (men and women) aren’t aware of the dangers that face them every day. Many of them grow up without receiving proper instructions on safety and healthy living. When my wife (a Filipino) first came to America 5 years ago, she was a danger to herself and to me. I mean, she did some pretty stupid things without thinking. We’d be traveling down the road (with me driving), and out-of-the-blue she would shout out about something while pointing with her lips to get my attention to it. To her, overhead work didn’t require a ladder. Just stack enough buckets or boxes or chairs on top of each other and starting climbing. Thank goodness, she has since learned to practice safety first.

February 5, 2012, Jan writes: Ben, I believe you, Look at common Filipino families they have plastic chairs all over the place. Broken or not, they stand on it and keep on using them. Lucky many Filipinos are not that heavy ....
And the self-made ladders they use in construction sites? I do not dare using them..

Copyright © ExpatInThePhilippines.com 2010
«PLEASE NOTE: You may be reading stolen content. Please visit the author's site to read the original, copyrighted material, and find even more great related content.»

Sometimes Filipinos are strange people. They are proud to be a Filipino, but like to live abroad. They do not like their country called a Third World Country, but keep on throwing garbage in the streets and pee everywhere. They love their country a lot, but hate products manufactured in the Philippines. If they own a car they like the car to have a foreign look, as if they bought it abroad, as if it was imported! For that reason some clever business people have imported used European License plates, most of them temporary plates, to sell them to Filipino car owners for high prices. Those plates are placed behind the Filipino license plate so only a small part is visible. When you are on the road you must have noticed these double plates on cars. In two earlier posts I wrote already about it and showed you the pictures of those plates which are available in stores and markets. See: my first post about license plates and the follow-up post. Just a few days ago I was in a hardware store, Handyman this time, and suddenly I saw these brand new fake license plates probably produced in the Philippines [...]

Related posts:

license plates in the Philippines

Recently I was visiting a subdivision to see if there was a nice house to buy when I spotted a remarkable fence around an open lot. The metal structure on top of the wall was formed in musical script with many notes and musical symbols. The owner of the lot must love music a lot or be a musician I suppose. No house was build yet, just the fencing was made so far and already a few years old seen the state it was in. If the music can be played I do not know, maybe someone from my readers can try and tell us. But I think it’s all just fantasy notes.
Did you read my post More fun in the Philippines ? This story is not part of that, but in a way it has to do with it. The following story I found on the Internet. By Patrick Camara Ropeta, ABS-CBN Europe News Bureau, Posted at 02/26/2011 Toughest Place to be a… Bus Driver?, this part of a BBC series exploring difficult working conditions around the world, has chosen Manila as the toughest place for drivers due to appalling road conditions in the city. The documentary followed the experience of John West, a British bus driver from London who spent a week in Manila to try his luck as a jeepney driver. “I know about Imelda Marcos and the shoes, but not much beyond that” he said. “It wasn’t what I was expecting at all.” The filmmakers revealed dangerous driving conditions in Manila, exposing lack of discipline by local drivers, lack of coherent traffic rules, lack of health and safety regulations, and chronic road congestion. The documentary is extraordinarily factual and we have high praises for the truths and realities presented,? enthused May Altarejos-Cueva from Project CARES, a Philippine initiative promoting road safety. ?We are happy that there is a [...]

Related posts:

taxi in the Philippines
Writing about taxi's in the Philippines is not an easy task.
When I first saw the name of this store in the Philippines I started to laugh at the ingenuity of Filipinos to find a name for their business. I wrote already a few times about this name giving thing in the Philippines. Remember Mang Donald for newly opened fast food restaurant? See the Mang Donald post, or the Brad Pitt name use, or Copyrights a farce?. But it is not always copying names. Filipinos also invent sometimes funny names for their businesses. Along Tuazon Ave in Cubao you can find this hardware store selling all kinds of screws, bolts and nuts. If they do other things than selling screws I do not know.
French is a difficult language, especially proper writing, even sometimes for native French people. When I was in high school, a loooooooong time ago, French was one of the foreign languages we had to learn. It became very handy when a few years later I moved to the French-speaking part of Belgium to work in a restaurant. Until today I can still speak and understand French comfortably. But that’s not the reason I am writing today. Today I would like to show you a picture of a hair salon in Cubao, along Tuazon Ave. The spelling of cheveaux is not correct and the way this is written is a mixture of ‘hair’ and ‘horses’. Let me explain: One single hair is: cheveu All the hair on your head is: cheveux (this is the regular plural form for words ending -eu in French) {an other example for it: jeu (game), plural jeux (games)} A horse in French is le cheval, plural is les chevaux {other example of this kind of words and the plural: le journal (newspaper), les journaux (newspapers)} The word cheveaux does not exist in French, it is just mis-spelled. But researching the Internet gave me some more faulty [...]

Related posts:

hair salons also have funny names sometimes
Recently I spotted this hair salon in the Ortigas area. As you can see the owner used a well-known former prison name but made a small change in the name. Alcutraz looks like Alcatraz but is just a hair salon.

Recently the DOT (Department of Tourism) launched its new campaign to attract more tourists to the Philippines. Just like two years ago they have brainstormed about a suitable slogan. Two years ago they have copied the colorful logo from an earlier and similar campaign in Poland. Much was said about this copying during that time. And I wrote part of a post about it. You can read it here: DOT campaign. This time they copied again, not a logo but the slogan used in Switzerland in the 50’s of last century. And again many people on the Internet and in newspapers are talking about it. The slogan is: It’s more fun in the Philippines (without exclamation mark / point). At the same time many pictures appeared on the internet to promote the campaign, but also to show the real situation in the Philippines. With this post I would like to show you MY WAY of how funny (or cruel) the Philippines sometimes is. Many of the pictures on the Internet have double meanings or make fun of the situation. I have selected a few of those pictures, added new ones and publish them here to show you how I think [...]

Comments

January 17, 2012, Miles Pagadian writes: Tsk tsk tsk...to say "It's More Fun In The Philippine" with most of the pics reflects the sick state of the filipino mind and ego..something is really really wrong!

January 17, 2012, Jan writes: Miles, That's the reason I published these: to show that there's still a lot to do for the people themselves and also for the government.

January 17, 2012, Miles Pagadian writes: I just hope that would be the interpretation of most filipinos with these photos...problem is only a fraction of the filipino masses have a better understanding on what and why the country is not progressing.
Already more than 10 years ago while I was visiting the Philippines, I bought a remarkable small and funny item to put on my desk at home. It is a small statue of about 5 inches high of a phallus with a funny face and wings. It is a little angel. This small item sits on my desk next to my pc already for years and sometimes, when friends visit us they will notice it and always smile…. Just a few days ago, when we (my wife, my sister-in-law and me) were visiting Dapitan to buy some Christmas decorations, I spotted a number of similar little statues. They are not that good in quality as the one I have, but they are nice little give-aways for your dearest (girl-)friends.
