The Filipinos celebrate many fiestas throughout the year. Every city, town, barangay and subdivision has its own fiesta. Filipinos are happy people and they like to celebrate something. For that reason they celebrate every occasion with smaller or bigger fiestas. Many of these fiestas are worth seeing because of the beautiful costumes, nice decorated floats and good local food and handicraft you will find there. Expat in the Philippines tries to make a list of the most important and most worthy to watch fiestas and festivals and events in the Philippines.
Being an Expat in the Philippines sometimes is difficult. Especially when you like to eat some food which normally only is available in your home country. And I like to cook from time to time my own Dutch food. Some specific Dutch dishes cannot be made in the Philippines because the right ingredients are not available. But today I was lucky to find something I’ve been longing for a long time. My dearest and I went to Santis Delicacies in Makati (Yakal street) and found one of the main ingredients to make Snert (a Dutch pea soup). The ingredient is celeriac or knolselderij in Dutch. Wikipedia link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celeriac It is imported from Europe probably and it is very expensive. We bought one piece of almost 700 grams at 631 pesos (915 pesos per kg). Other necessary ingredients are not that difficult to get but are sometimes rare in this country, like Leeks. There are vegetables available here they call leeks but actually they are a kind of big spring onions. We bought leeks already a few weeks ago when we have seen them and put them in the freezer. The same with the dried green split peas (dried green peas, [...]

Comments

January 15, 2012, Marvin Umbras writes: I was craving some swiss cheese for a long time. We can't find it up here in northern Philippines so when ever some one makes a trip to Manila I ask if they can look for it. Well, one neighbor went down there on a short trip and said he looked everywhere, no swiss. My wife went to a wedding in Manila after that and also reported being unable to find any. Now I was sad and could not understand why others were unable or unwilling to just buy some and bring it back. When living in Cavite several years ago I bought it all the time. Next was my turn, I had to make a trip down there for a medical procedure and when I had the chance I went to a couple different SM grocery stores and was surprised that no swiss cheese available. I'm still craving.

January 15, 2012, Jan writes: Hi Marvin,
I have seen fresh Emmenthal and probably other swiss cheeses in several stores. But you have to go to areas where more expats live, like Makati, Eastwood and Ortigas.
Supermarkets like: SM, Landmark, Rustan's and also Shopwise have a large assortment of cheeses from all over the world. But also Santi's has a nice assortment cheese (the owner is Swiss or Austrian) and imports to the Philippines himself.
Next time instruct your 'relatives' what and where to buy your cheese ans store it in the fridge ass much as possible! And pack it well before moving to the North.

January 15, 2012, Vicmico writes: Hey Jan,

been a long time since my last visit to yr website (btw, thanks for the good wishes for 2012), but we're still here in The Neths, and still planning our move to the Phils late next yr - Duma, as you may recall...
Since you are obviously craving for Dutch food (heaven knows why..)I put a link here to a webshop you may want to use if the craving gets too much: http://www.heimweewinkel.nl/
As for the question about cheese in the earlier response: We found Old Amsterdam (not exactly Swiss but at least 200% better than the US junk they sell as cheese normally) in the Robinsons supermarket in the new shopping mall in Dumaguete last year. Maybe an acceptable alternative??

After more than three years in the Philippines sometimes I want to eat typical Dutch food stuff. In general I can find all I want, it's just a few things which are difficult to find. Dutch Cheese is no problem, many supermarrkets sell it. Frico Cheese in several varieties, Old Amsterdamm is one of them.
Zuurkool I have found in cans, and recently I have found an address for celeriac (knolselderij) as you have read. Spruitjes (brussels sprouts) were imported from Australia and as big as tennis balls, but the taste was not good (the price was....).
Lucky we are living near Manila where much European and other western food is available (from time to time), for high prices that is.
I have checked this website you are mentioning. Many of those food items are available here (or similar items imported from other countries) and for similar prices. So there's no need to have it send here by them. And I eat rice as well....
It's only that sometimes ......

Related posts:

InterNations
The online community InterNations attracts thousands of members in search of new contacts abroad every month.
MERI KRISMAS EBRIWAN, That’s what I read on a shop window in Ali Mall in Cubao today. Of course this text was made this way intentionally because Filipinos know how to write Merry Christmas Everyone properly. I find it funny, that’s why I took a picture to show you this. Near by Ali Mall is also a SM mall, and there I spotted a couple who just bought a Christmas tree, not a normal one but completely decorated. They were waiting for a taxi to bring them home with the tree. The picture is not that sharp because I had to take is from more than 20 meters and had to use the zoom function. Also the light was not very good, and I was a little in a hurry to have this picture taken. Just click on the picture to see it larger. EXPAT IN THE PHILIPPINES would like to wish all regular readers and visitors a Merry Christmas and already a Prosperous 2012.
A few cities in the Philippines have implemented a city ordinance that forbids shop owners to pack their merchandise in plastic bags. It is a known fact that many of those plastic bags end up in the garbage dumps and it will take many years to be broken down by nature (if ever). The packaging industry will have a difficult time in the future. The only way to survive is to produce very well biodegradable packages for use in markets, supermarkets and the like. One of those cities is Antipolo, Rizal where we live. Shop owners and supermarkets have to find alternative ways to pack their goods if a customer doesn’t bring his own re-usable bags. The alternative is paper bags. But paper bags are more expensive than plastic, and this affects the price of the items or the total profits of the shop owner. So they are using alternatives now. There are many old newspapers, telephone directories and other paper sheets which they cut and fold, put some glue and transform them in paper bags. In the pictures you can see how they do it and what paper they are using. In empty hours when it is not that [...]

Comments

December 1, 2011, Markus Kleemund writes: Hi there,I'm a german expat, living in northern Mindanao and i know the probs with the plastic bags.Unfortunately the people often throw them everywhere in the nature.

HO HO HO, a Santa yelled at Glorietta in Makati last Sunday November 13 while on TV Manny Pacquiao was fighting against Marquez. Flor and I, but also our British friend Peter and his wife Rebecca didn’t want to watch the boxing so we went out and ended in Glorietta Mall in Makati. I was in a good mood and replied immediately by raising my hand towards him from about 5 or 6 meters distance and repeated his HO HO HO almost the same way he said it. People who know me, know that sometimes I do that kind of things, just to laugh and have fun. Santa approached me and we hugged laughing about what happened. Unfortunately from that little moment there are no pictures but I can assure you it was hilarious. Some other people who were in the Mall and nearby find it also funny and some of them take pictures of us when we were posing with Santa. When we were talking to him it was clear to me that he was not a 100% Filipino Santa, he had a more caucasian nose and his English was without Filipino accent. When I asked him where he [...]

Related posts:

Santa Claus becomes Filipino
Today we were in Cubao. Going out for dinner, buy a new computer, or other things you don’t have the budget for. You might think: I can find a job easily in the Philippines. Maybe so, but the jobs you are looking for are scarce or you need to work long hours and for Filipino wages. Aside from that you need a working permit and that is a complete different story. You might think: I’ll start my own business. Could be, but this is not that easy. You can never own a business in the Philippines on your own name. You need a Filipino citizen to be the co-owner for at least 60%. Aside from that you have to be very careful that you will not get robbed by your employees or even your Filipino partner. OK, you say, my Filipino wife can own the business. But never forget that you still have an extended family who likes to get also something from your profits….
Starting September, the Philippines is already thinking of the Christmas holidays and the coming Christmas season. Slowly you see malls getting decorated, playing Christmas songs and even on TV every news channel is announcing ‘how many days it still is until Christmas’. hardware stores in malls and department stores are displaying all their latest Christmas decorations and (artificial) trees in all colors. Thousands of blinking lights, accompanied with singing angels are telling you: Christmas is coming! Last week was a little strange. Christmas decoration was mixed up with Halloween decorations, but at the moment I am writing this, more and more shops, streets and places get (sometimes extravagant) Christmas decorations. A few days ago I was in Quezon City, Libis, Eastwood, where some employees were preparing a giant Christmas tree. Natural Christmas trees, as we know them in Europe or America, we do not know here at least not the large ones. It is too expensive to import them here. And aside from that they won’t last long in temperatures of around 30 degrees Celsius, and the season has only started. So what they do is: they build a metal structure and cover it with plastic green Christmas tree like branches, [...]

Comments

November 15, 2011, Vicmico writes: Nice pics Jan, thanks.
